An allegedly intoxicated Mexican tourist driving an SUV struck and critically injured a street sweeper in Pattaya before attempting to flee, only to be caught by a good Samaritan.
At 6:36 AM on November 18th, Pattaya police received a report of a severe car accident on South Pattaya Road near a petrol station. Emergency responders from the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Center immediately rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, a crowd, including the victim’s anxious boyfriend and friends, had gathered to witness the incident. The victim, identified as Ms. Suchada Pilasuk, a 22-year-old cleaning staff member employed under contract with Pattaya City, was found lying in a pool of blood on the road. She had been struck by a car, which caused her body to be thrown violently onto the pavement, resulting in critical injuries. Rescue workers administered first aid before rushing her to the hospital.
Police arrived and found the victim’s damaged broom and dustpan at the scene. The vehicle involved, a white Toyota Fortuner SUV, was found a distance away from the scene.
According to several eye-witnesses, the driver of the SUV had attempted to flee after the accident, but fortunately, a good Samaritan pursued the car and managed to block it. The SUV’s front was slightly damaged, and the driver, an allegedly heavily intoxicated Mexican tourist, identified by police only as 34-year-old Mr. Choo, was taken into custody.
According to Mr. Apichai Prakobsaeng, the 29-year-old boyfriend of the victim, Ms. Suchada had been sweeping sand and debris from the road when the speeding SUV struck her, throwing her to the ground. The driver did not stop to check on her and tried to flee the scene immediately.
Mr. Wattanakorn Waenkwan, a 25-year-old good Samaritan, reported witnessing the accident and observed that the driver accelerated to escape without assisting the victim. He chased the vehicle on his motorbike, calling for others to help, and eventually managed to stop the SUV a short distance away and notify the authorities.
A breathalyzer test reportedly revealed that Mr. Choo had a blood alcohol level of 77 mg%, which exceeded the legal limit. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the scene to gather evidence for legal proceedings.
Mr. Choo was unable to answer any questions due to his seemingly advanced state of intoxication and was taken into custody. He faces multiple serious legal charges related to the incident.
