Thread: Iconic Italian ship Amerigo Vespucci opens for public viewing in Phuket

The world-renowned Italian sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci, celebrated as the most beautiful and oldest sailing ship, is now open for public tours at Phuket’s deep-sea port from November 6-10. Built in 1930, this majestic ship has embarked on a global voyage, with Phuket as one of its stops. Upon arrival, the vessel was welcomed by Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, who coordinated a security and safety display, with support from Thai Navy aircraft and vessels.


The Amerigo Vespucci, crafted with exquisite triple masts and intricate carvings, showcases a unique blend of classic elegance and grandeur. As part of its world tour to promote Italian culture, the ship is stopping at 15 international ports, where visitors can enjoy Italian history, an onboard Italian restaurant, and cultural performances.


The public viewing sessions start on November 6 at 3:30 p.m. and are available to registered guests. Following its Phuket visit, the Amerigo Vespucci will continue its journey to India, bringing a piece of Italian maritime heritage to people around the world.

The Amerigo Vespucci, Italy’s famous and oldest sailing ship, invites registered visitors to explore its unique onboard cultural village, complete with Italian cinema and exhibitions. Highlights include screenings of five classic Italian films, six exhibitions, and a rare display of an Olympic torch from Italy’s early Olympic hosting days. Visitors can also view the bronze La David, a reimagining of Michelangelo’s masterpiece by Italian architect Giacomo.




The ship is open exclusively to registered guests. Comfortable shoes are recommended, while open-toed and high-heeled shoes are prohibited. Viewing times are as follows:
Wednesday, Nov 6: 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Nov 7: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Friday, Nov 8: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, Nov 9: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, Nov 10: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

There is a quantifiable point ("oldest") and a non-quantifiable point ("most beautiful").

Being the "oldest" no way. The ship was built in 1930!!!!!

The oldest sailing ship is the Star of India, which is a full-rigged iron windjammer, meaning it has three masts and square sails on all three masts (pinched from the internet). It is an active sailing ship.

Beauty is subjective, so I will pass on that!

Mendip might be along shortly to remind us that HMS Victory was launched in 1765. I don't suppose she'll sail again but she is still a commissioned vessel in the Royal Navy.
