A Thai woman was killed in Taiwan when Kong-rey, the strongest typhoon in 30 years, hit the island on Thursday.
Nikorndej Balankura, spokesman for the Thai Foreign Minister, said today that the ministry had been informed by the Taipei Trade and Economic Office that the woman, identified as Rungsinee Horthiwong, a native of Sukhothai, was killed in a road accident in Nantou city as she was travelling in a car, with her Taiwanese employer.
According to Taiwanese authorities, two people were killed and about 580 others were injured by the typhoon.
Nikorndej said that officials at the Thai Labour Ministry havealready contacted the family of the deceased and informed them about the compensation and other benefits that they are entitled to receive from the state.
The strength of typhoon Kong-rey was equivalent to aCategory 4 hurricane when it made landfall near Chenggong on Thursday (local time). All schools and government offices were closed. More than 200,000 households were still without power Thursday evening.
Taiwan’s military placed over 34,000 soldiers on standby, to assist with rescue efforts. More than 8,600 people had already been evacuated from high-risk areas on Wednesday.
More than 500 flights had to be cancelled and all ferry services were suspended.
