At 7:55 AM on August 3rd, 2024, Chiang Mai local media reported a ceiling collapse at a security checkpoint in Chiang Mai Airport that injured two foreign children.
Chiang Mai Airport medical staff promptly provided first aid to the two foreign children, and Chiang Mai Airport officials closely monitored the situation. The first victim, a Dutch child, sustained minor injuries to the back of his hand, while a Chinese child suffered a head injury.
The Dutch child and his family chose to continue their journey to Don Mueang Airport, with coordination from Chiang Mai Airport to ensure their safe and comfortable travel.
The Chinese child was taken to a private hospital in Chiang Mai for a thorough examination and received stitches for a 5 centimetre head wound. After treatment, the child’s family returned to the airport to prepare for a flight to Hat Yai Airport.
Airport authorities provided extensive assistance, including new clothes, new tickets for the families, lunch, and access to a VIP lounge. They also offered initial compensation and will coordinate with insurance companies for further support.
Wing Commander Ronnakorn Chalermsanyakorn, the general manager of Chiang Mai International Airport, apologized and expressed deep regret for the incident. He assured that feedback and suggestions would be used to prevent future occurrences.
The collapse was attributed to weakened ceiling panels due to moisture from the air conditioning ducts, exacerbated by recent continuous rainfall. The airport is currently replacing the insulation and removing damaged panels as part of their maintenance plan, which will be expedited to prevent further issues, according to Chiang Mai local media.
