Thailand Under a Nationwide Flood Watch for Due to Heavy Rain

On Sunday, government authorities in Thailand issued a nationwide flood watch, warning that heavy rains will increase throughout the first week of this month. According to the Meteorological Department, the North, the Northeast, and the South will all see significant rainfall on Sunday and Monday.

The lower Northeast, lower Central Plain, the East, and the South might have significant rainfall from Tuesday through Saturday.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation issued a warning to residents of 11 provinces around the Chao Phraya flood basin that rising flood levels could threaten their homes beginning on Monday.

The alert went sent to the people of Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chai Nat, Lop Buri, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, and Uthai Thani.

Parts of Ang Thong and Ayutthaya that are low to the ground may see water levels rise by between 1.00 and 1.50 metres.

The forecast for this week predicts heavy rainfall in the Northeast, Central Plain, and Southern regions, with much of the precipitation coming from the North.

On Sunday, the Yom River flooded into the Muang district of the northern province of Sukhothai due to broken embankments, impacting roughly 1,300 homes and 2,400 rai of farmland.

The province of Sukhothai, according to Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin, may experience an increase in flooded regions as a result of torrential rains coming from neighbouring Phrae province.

In the Northern province of Phetchabun, the Lom Sak district saw receding floodwaters on Sunday. The local reservoirs, according to Phetchabun governor Krit Kongmuang, are between 80% and 90% full.

On Sunday, the Highways Department stated that floods and mudslides had rendered four highways in the northern provinces of Lampang, Lamphun, and Sukhothai inaccessible.

These included Highway 1102 in Lampang’s Mae Phrik district, Highways 1010 and 1184 in Lamphun’s Ban Hong and Thung Hua Chang, and Highway 1056 in Sukhothai’s Sri Samrong.

As the northern run-off from the Yom River is projected to produce more floods in provinces downstream, including Sukhothai and Phitsanulok, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Saturday ordered a swift reaction to the floods currently occurring in numerous provinces in upper Thailand.

On Saturday, reports surfaced of flooding in numerous provinces in the north and northeast, including Phrae and Phetchabun, where one deluge had triggered an evacuation in several regions.

Government spokeswoman Chai Wacharonke said that Mr. Srettha had stressed the importance of the Ministry of Interior and other relevant state agencies reaching out to flood victims as soon as possible to safeguard their safety and provide flood relief.

The Prime Minister has been kept apprised of the flood situation and has given Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin authority over the flood response efforts now being coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of the Transport, as reported by the Ministry’s official spokeswoman.

Overflow from the Yom River is likely to flood more settlements in Sukhothai and Phitsanulok, therefore Mr. Chai said the flooding will continue for at least another day or two in those areas.

He added the provinces located downstream of the Yom River should expect a significant amount of runoff from the north, thus the Royal Irrigation Department is currently in a race against time to redirect as much runoff as possible into the Nan River.

The provincial government of Phrae urged all district offices and local administrative bodies to stay on high alert and prepare for additional flooding yesterday. On Saturday morning, the province in the north saw more heavy rainfall, leading to flooding and evacuations in numerous areas.

The runoff flooded several homes and streets in the Den Chai, Long, Sung Men, and Muang districts. The rising flood waters on Saturday caused extensive damage to numerous automobiles, especially in the Muang district.

Yesterday, rescue personnel in Mae Hong Son’s Mae Sariang area cleared the roadway of huge trees and electricity posts that had fallen during the recent downpour. Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang hastened to the flood-ravaged province of Udon Thani, where the districts of Phen and Si That are located.

He claimed to have ordered the deployment of military medical personnel to flood-stricken areas to provide relief to those in need.

Rising water in Chao Phraya increasing flood risk in Ayutthaya and Ang Thong this week

People living in low-lying areas unprotected by floodwalls in some areas of the central provinces of Ang Thong and Ayutthaya are advised to brace for flooding between October 3rd and 7th, due to the rising water level in the Chao Phraya River, which is being caused by northern runoff.

According to the National Water Resources Office, the amount of water in the Chao Phraya flowing through the Chao Phraya dam in Chainat province between October 3rd and 7th is expected to be increased to 1,200-1,400 cubic metres per second. This will push the water from the river, which is expected to rise by as much as 1.5 metres, into areas outside the floodwalls in Khlong Pongpeng of Ang Thong, Hua Wiang sub-district in Sena district and Lat Chid sub-district in the Pak Hai district of Ayutthaya up by 1-1.5 metres.

Overflows are also expected during the same period from the Wang River in Sam Ngao and Ban Tak districts in Tak province and from the Yom River in Sawankhalok, Sri Nakhon, Si Samrong, Si Satchanalai, Thung Saliam and Mueang districts of Sukhothai province.

About 1,400 households in 165 villages in Sukhothai have already been affected by flooding and over 386 hectares of farmland have sustained damage.

Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsuthin visited Sukhothai province yesterday (Saturday), to see the situation for himself and coordinate relief efforts.

He expressed concern over the increased amount of water now flowing downstream the Yom River, saying that it has increased by 350 cubic metres/second, on top of the nominal rate of 880 cubic metres/second.

He said that the sluice gate in Sukhothai province can discharge only 450 cubic metres/second of water downstream and this will increase the risk of flooding in Sukhothai.

Meanwhile, in Chiang Mai province, Highway 3003 linking Chom Thong district with Lamphun province is partially flooded, making the affected section impassable to all vehicles. Three bridges are reported to have been damaged by the flooding.

I wouldn't complain about an excessively wet season. I think the hot one is going to be a belter.

Villages in Sukhothai flooded as Yom River embankment collapses

The embankment along the Yom River in Sukhothai province has collapsed in several areas, sending water from the swollen river gushing into riverside farmland and local communities.

One gaping hole in Ban Wang Yai in Wang Yai sub-district is about 100 metres long, causing excess water to sweep into Wang Yai and Wang Thong sub-districts. About 500 households are now under water.

Villagers in Wang Yai say that they have not experienced such serious flooding for many years.

Several areas downstream of the Yom River in Suwankhalok, Si Samrong and Mueang districts of Sukhothai have been flooded since Saturday.

Governor Suchart Teekhasuk led officials to inspect a breached embankment near a bridge in Mueang district and to coordinate relief efforts.

The Royal Irrigation Department has been diverting water from the Yom River into the Nan River and the Bang Rakham swamp, which is currently holding about 200 million cubic metres of water, but still has the capacity take another 200 million cubic metres.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has advised people living along the Chao Phraya River in Uthai Thani, Chainat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan to take precautions and to stay updated on thewater situation, as the water level is steadily rising.

The National Water Command Centre, meanwhile, says that the level of the Moon River in the north-eastern province of Ubon Ratchathani is expected to peak at 7.81 metres this Wednesday, before it starts to recede gradually.

Water from the river has been flooding a riverside community in municipal area for almost a week now, but most residents have refused to evacuate, insisting that they can still stay on the second floor of their houses.

Flooding Hits Northern Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister Assures Aid

On Sunday, the Yom River burst its embankments and flooded Muang district in the northern province of Sukhothai, affecting approximately 1,300 households and submerging around 960 acres of farmland.

Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin promptly visited the affected areas in Sukhothai province to assess the situation and provide much-needed assistance. He expressed concerns that the province might face additional torrents from Phrae province, potentially exacerbating the flooding.

In a reassuring effort to address the ongoing crisis, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin pledged government support for the affected communities. The response includes both immediate relief efforts and longer-term plans to mitigate future risks.

Meanwhile, floodwaters in Lom Sak district of Phetchabun province, also located in the northern region, began to recede on Sunday. The local reservoirs were currently at 80-90% capacity, potentially signaling reduced risk in the region.

The Highways Department reported several major road closures in the northern provinces of Lampang, Lamphun, and Sukhothai due to flooding and mudslides.

The situation in northern Thailand remains fluid, with ongoing efforts to provide relief, assess damage, and manage the effects of the flooding. Local authorities and government agencies are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of affected residents and communities.

Thailand to Face Heavy Rain This Week

Government agencies have issued warnings about the anticipated heavy rainfall and rising water levels throughout the first week of October. The Meteorological Department has specifically highlighted regions in the North, Northeast, and the South as areas that will experience heavy rains.

From Tuesday until Saturday, heavy downpours are expected in the lower Northeast, the lower Central Plain, the East, and the South. As a result, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has cautioned residents living near waterways in 11 provinces within the Chao Phraya river basin to be vigilant, as water levels could start to rise as early as Monday.

The warning extends to residents of Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chai Nat, Lop Buri, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, and Uthai Thani. In some low-lying areas of Ang Thong and Ayutthaya, water levels may rise by 1.00-1.50 meters.

The department has attributed these conditions to the influx of water flowing from the North, with heavy rainfall expected in the Northeast, the Central Plain, and the South throughout the week.

Monsoon troughs blamed for rain and flooding in Sukhothai province

The flooding in Thailand’s central province of Sukhothai is attributable to areas upstream of the province being affected by monsoon troughs since late September, causing heavy rainfall in the Yom River basin, according to Thaweesak Thanadechophol, deputy director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department (RID).

Because the Yom River is narrow and not very deep, the swollen river quickly overtopped its banks, which led to the collapse of embankments in several locations, sending water sweeping through many villages in Sukhothai province, he told Thai PBS Online today.

About 4,000 households have been affected by flooding and more than 16,000 hectares farmland have been damaged.

To ease the flooding in Sukhothai, RID officials have diverted water in the Yom River into the Nan River, through the Hat Saphan Chan sluice gate and the Hok Baat canal, while also reducing the volume of water being discharged through the Sirikit dam in Uttaradit province. Water from Hok Baat canal is also being diverted via Bang Kaew sluice gate into the Nan River.

Thaweesak said that the amount of water flowing through Sukhothai in the Yom River has now dropped to 418 cubic metres/second and will continue to fall steadily, unless another mass of water arrives from upstream.

He said that some of the water that is flowing through the broken embankments has been directed to the Thung Bang Rakham water retention area, which is still capable of holding an additional 200 million cubic metres.

The runoff from the Yom river is expected to flow into the Chao Phraya River in about two days, but the RID has a plan in place to divert the water into the Tha Chin and Noi rivers and the Makham Tao U-thong canal on the east side of the Chao Phraya, and to the west side of the river into Rapeephat canal and Bang Phra reservoir in Chon Buri, by means of a pumping system.

About 1,200 cubic metres/second of water is being discharged from the Chao Phraya River in Chainat province, which is below the maximum volume of 2,500 cubic metres/second, said Thaweesak.

Minister Varawut Inspects Suphan Buri Preparation for Potential Flooding

Efforts to monitor and manage potential flooding in the capital district of Suphan Buri province were accelerated recently, as local water levels rise and concerns among local communities grow.

An on-site inspection of water levels at the Pho Phraya floodgate was carried out by Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security, along with the Member of Parliament for Suphan Buri and other relevant authorities.

Minister Varawut noted that concerns raised by a member of parliament (MP) representing Suphan Buri reflect those of the local populace. Anxiety levels have risen among residents, particularly after witnessing heavy flooding in Sukhothai, Phrae, and Lampang provinces. Presently, the flow rate through the Chao Phraya Dam remains at a safe level which is below 1,000 cubic meters per second, which ensures that there is currently no need to release additional water downstream.

For precautionary reasons, Varawut stated that his team is continuously monitoring water levels at various floodgates and river sections, to plan for any long-term flooding events. He emphasized that even in the absence of additional rainfall, water from the northern region should be able to flow safely through the Chao Phraya River to the sea.

Doesn't make the 'news' just the local Facebook pages, more drownings in rural Thailand - there have been three possible four drownings in floodwaters in the past week at Khitchakut in central Chanthaburi province, two adults, another still missing and a five year old girl whose body was found two days later 9km downstream.

Chanthaburi River through the city is high but enough diverted through the canal upstream to avoid any flooding
