Brighton mother's grief over son’s death in Thailand as she 'fights for answers'

A mother from Brighton has spoken of her grief following her son's death while he was travelling in Thailand.

Charmaine Baptiste's son Darnel Kimbia, 24, was found dead in Bangkok two weeks ago.

The country's authorities say it was suicide but his family believe otherwise and wants police in the UK to investigate.

A crowdfunding page has already raised more than £10,000 for his repatriation - which will take place next week.

Ms Baptiste received phone calls and emails, from Bangkok, written to her in Thai, which had incorrect dates.

The messages informed her that her son died by suicide and that he had left a note.

Ms Baptiste said: "I feel like it's a lie, my son would never do that. He wasn't suicidal. He had his whole life ahead of him at 24.

"He was educated, he had a good graduate job. He had no reason.

“I feel sick to my stomach. I’m trying to stay strong because I want answers. I want justice and I want to find out what actually happened to him, I won't be able to sleep until I do.

"I need to find out what happened to my child - he would never leave us in so much pain. He would know that would break my heart, break all of our hearts.”

Ms Baptiste's partner, Anton Dixon said: “We’re hurt, we need answers. We need to make sure that everything sent to us is looked over by the UK police because we are not accepting that it was suicide."

ITV Meridian asked the Foreign Office about Darnel Kimbia's death. A spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand".

Wrong dates on an email written in Thai is not surprising and certainly not evidence that the cause of death was not by suicide.

What did the note say? Perhaps it contains the reason or excuse.

Perhaps Darnell Kimbia from Brighton had some other news that, sadly, he believed would break his mother's heart.

The general unreliability must be particularly difficult to deal with in circumstances like this.

How, pray tell, is that speculation?

    It is very obviously speculation.

A big clue is the word 'perhaps'.

The other channel has a long thread already on this chap, typically littered with idiocy.

The oddity of it all is his relative youth, only 24, a person who had a coherent and successful academic progression from secondary school onto university where he graduated with a 2.1 BSc following which he obtained a professional post as a trainee insolvency practitioner last year. He seems to have negotiated a break in that role and arrived in SE Asia some months ago after which there is no further information.

Not an obvious candidate for immature suicide according to his profile, a seemingly well adjusted young man who also took part time gainful employment during his studies.

Details are unclear but it seems he jumped from a tallish building and was discovered in a car park in Soi 50, presumably near the junction with Big C in Soi 50 Sukhumvit, On Nut at 0940 hrs with a suicide note. AFAIK there are no high rise hotels there, and no cheapo places for backpackers to stay, and suicide at that time, again, is a bit odd.

The report from the mother is garbled in that she says the Thai authorities have emailed her etc. This is plainly wrong given it would be the British embassy making contact. They may have enclosed for completeness sake copies of Thai correspondence received from the authorities, however. The confusion over dates may arise from the use of the Thai calendar.

On the face of it his suicide is perplexing. One scenario might be he had fallen foul of some police/crook extortion racket in which he was threatened with prison unless he came up with loads of cash he simply did not have and could not involve his family, but chose to kil himself as a solution - the drug dealers and police working the KPG Full Moon parties would hook several lads with the scam and extort credit card balances in return for bail and release. I think one Brit kid topped himself because he was overwhelmed by it all.

I am never confident when matters involve the British embassy, so many times they are little more than chocolate teapots and glass hammers.

Times like this one needs an Andrew Drummond.

Andrew was made an offer for his website that he couldn’t refuse, but refused it nevertheless. He and his three children made a clandestine crossing into Cambodia facilitated by others under the threat of assassination and from there he was spirited to Blighty on passports quickly issued by the Brits for his children.
He lives in an undisclosed property in the Cotswolds and has not ventured back to Thailand since.

Well it couldn't have been depression because every child dreams of becoming an insolvency practitioner.

Did you work for Murdoch media previously? That might explain your habitual habit of posting bullshit and assuming it will be believed.

I feel this is worth reposting after the recent string of convict sporting failures.

Wasn’t it about 2-3 years ago this month that Wally Raffles killed himself? Sorry, for some reason this thread reminded me of good ole Wally. Miss that guy around here.

^yes, I remember Wally. I think he was living in Japan then? And he lived in a small town - maybe he was the only foreigner there. He made some posts that he was in low spirits, then he went under the radar. Then next news was of his death. I think that thread was the only time that I interacted with him.

    *****

A bit out of topic, but how about Hick? He also died relatively young. Did he die of an illness? If yes, which one? (curious minds...) He seemed like an upbeat dude.

You really can’t accept the utter irrelevance of your futile, insignificant life in which incomprehension, stupidity and a bovine ignorance are your daily bread, can you?

    Possible.

A simpler answer would be that he was facing the return to a meaningless life back in the Big Grey and death, in comparison, was a welcome upgrade.
