Kazakh man in police custody over alleged shooting of Russian in Phuket

A Kazakh man was arrested on Thursday at Phuket international airport on suspicion of involvement in the shooting of a Russian national in the commercial area of the resort island on Wednesday.

The suspect was apprehended by Thai police as he was trying to board a flight bound for Russia, according to the investigative commander of the Region 8 Provincial Police Bureau.

Riding a motorcycle, wearing gloves, a jacket and with his face covered by a crash helmet and hood, a gunman approached a car, being driven by the Russian national, which had stopped in front of a coffee shop. He fired several shots from a pistol at the person in the driver’s seat, seriously injuring him.

Police retraced the gunman’s escape route using CCTV until they found a jacket, a pair of gloves, shoes and sunglasses abandoned at a spot near a housing estate about a kilometre from the crime scene. The motorcycle, allegedly used by the gunman, was left at a resort.

The commander said that he suspects that the gunman and the victim might be involved in criminal activities, adding that they will seek help from an interpreter during the interrogation of the suspect.

Kazakhstani Suspect in Shooting of Russian Man in Phuket Initially Charged with Overstaying

A Kazakhstani suspect has been arrested at Phuket International Airport after a Russian businessman was injured after being shot while he was in a car at a popular cafe in Phuket. The suspect has initially been charged with overstaying.

The Phuket Provincial Police Commander Major General Sermphan Sirikong told the Phuket Express on Thursday afternoon (June 8th) that the Kazakhstani suspect had overstayed his legal visa, although the exact number of days he had overstayed was not mentioned by relevant law enforcement officials. At this stage, he has been charged with overstaying and other potential charges like attempted murder are under investigation and review.

The suspect has not cooperated well in the questioning process, added police, and has requested to meet with the Kazakhstan embassy as he did not speak English or Thai.

The injured victim, Mr. ALEYNIKOV DMITRY, 44, Russian national, is still being treated at a hospital but according to doctors is out of the “danger zone” and expected to fully survive and recover from multiple gunshot wounds. Once he is medically well enough to do so, Phuket police plan to interview Mr. Dmitry to determine if he had any idea why the suspect, Mr. Artur Legay, 49, allegedly attempted to kill him.

Mr. Dmitry was reportedly conscious, cognizant, and talking, although not yet ready for an interview.

Kazakhstani Suspect Denies all Charges, Gun Found in Phuket Pond

A Kazakhstani man, suspected of shooting a Russian man who was sitting in his car at a popular Phuket Cafe, has denied all charges including intent to murder. A gun believed to be the weapon used in the crime has been found in a pond in Cherng Talay, Thalang.

The Phuket Provincial Police Commander Major General Sermphan Sirikong told the Phuket Express on Saturday (June 10th) that an arrest warrant was issued by the Phuket Provincial Court on Thursday (June 8th) for the Kazakhstani suspect, Mr. Artur Legay, 49.

Mr. Legay is facing charges with intent to murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. However he has denied all charges and told police that he knows nothing at all and has been described as uncooperative with any questioning.

The Phuket Express noted, a legal charge for ‘Opening fire in public without a reason’ was not mentioned as a current charge applied to Mr. Legay.

On Friday night (June 9th) the hand gun that Mr. Legay allegedly used to shoot the Russian man, Mr. ALEYNIKOV DMITRY, 44, was found in a pond which is about one kilometer from the scene.

Legay is not expected to be granted bail as he is considered to be a flight risk and will remain in Thai custody awaiting trial.

Mr. Dmitry is recovering from his bullet wounds in a local Phuket hospital and is said to be conscious, cognizant, and in upbeat spirits. He has not, however, yet officially conducted an interview with law enforcement about the incident due to his still recovering health.
