Thread: Authorities in Chiang Rai Hunt From 22-Year-Old Malaysian Woman

A search has been initiated for a young Malaysian woman who, according to her mother, has not been in contact since emailing images shot during a trip to the border town of Mae Sai in Chiang Rai province. She is concerned that her daughter is in danger.


The mother’s Facebook statement was posted in both Chinese and English on Friday, accompanied with photos given by her daughter, Angie Chong Sum Yee, 22.


The remark, which was later translated into Thai, as well as the photos, were extensively circulated on social media, including the “Muang Chiang Mai” Facebook page.

The mother stated that her daughter flew alone to Chiang Mai on May 29. Her daughter photographed numerous locations in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and forwarded them to her.


The final images she sent her showed her in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai, a border town outside Myanmar’s Tachilek. They included the Mae Sai and Tachilek border checkpoints. She stated that her daughter had not communicated with her since sending the images from Mae Sai.


The mother was concerned that her daughter had crossed the border from Mae Sai to Tachilek and was in danger. At the Tachilek crossing, immigration and tourist police have called Myanmar officials.


They were told to look through security camera footage to determine if the young Malaysian woman had crossed the border to Tachilek, which has numerous huge casinos and business buildings where many Thais and other nationals work.

Actually, that crossing is leakier than Mendip's underkaks.

Probably the worst in the country for human trafficking, and general trafficking of every kind. The casino service staff typically just go across by boat.

MY KMU Net CCTV footage in the lobby of the hotel where Angie was last seen. In the video, Angie is seen with a woman dressed in white before the two disappear on a motorcycle.

Of course if trafficked easy to pay some low paid officials to look the other way.

Yeah, though around this time of year the water's a little bit higher, so instead of just wading across the couple of meters, they take these little, well, not so little ferries.

She [Angie] left the hotel bedroom and waited in the lobby, then walked out to the front of the hotel to meet the girl who had picked her up, and walked back in to get her luggage before leaving together.
She crossed the river to Tachilek province, Myanmar, and on the morning of May 30 the SIM card of the mobile phone was changed to Myanmar.
Police at Mae Sai Police Station received a report that there were 2 videos of Angie speaking in Chinese, the first of which is 22 seconds long, which translates to "I am working now and very safe. Please do not touch the driver. He didn't do anything wrong," and the second clip, which is only 2 seconds long, shows her working at an e-cigarette shop in Tachilek.
Police believe the recording was at the Golden Gate Hotel near Tachileik Airport
Police also revealed that Angie had obtained a visa from Malaysia to enter Thailand as a tourist, but when crossing into Myanmar, she illegally left the Kingdom and entered Tachileik illegally.
