Yes, Thai Banks are Starting to Require Facial Recognition for High-Value Transaction

Financial institutions in Thailand have begun mandating facial recognition for customers conducting high-value transactions. The move, aimed at reducing fraudulent activities and scams, is expected to provide extra security for clients.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul announced that all commercial and government banks will implement this new security measure. Starting from July, customers transacting 50,000 baht or more via mobile banking, or whose transactions exceed a daily limit of 200,000 baht, will be required to verify their identities via facial recognition systems.

Traisuree explained that this measure is part of broader anti-cybercrime initiatives spearheaded by the Bank of Thailand (BOT) and other relevant agencies.

Commercial banks have already taken steps to combat online fraud, including no longer sending text messages containing web links to their clients. Mobile banking users can verify their biometric enrollment status via banking apps.

Those who have yet to enroll may need to contact their bank for a facial scan in order to comply with the new regulation.

BKK bank started. I have already used it. Works just fine. Just one more step in a transfer process.

I took my Bank Book and Passport. I signed a form that basically allows them to take your picture and keep it on file. They take your pic and that's that. They told me it uploads the next business day and is active. I used it about a week ago. I went to the app, logged in to transfer funds to my wife to pay our bills and the last step, it prompts you to hold your phone out a bit to see your face and then BAM...done.

    Painless and easy.

Last time I went to BKK bank, about 4 months ago, it was the head office on Silom in Bangkok, to renew my ATM card, update passport details and get a new passbook, I was asked to fill out a form and was presented with an A4 sheet of paper, on one side of which was printed the form, on the other side of the sheet was a photocopy of another foreigners already filled in form, containing his passport number, date of birth, address and bank account number.

When I pointed this out to the employee, she was oblivious to the fact that I was highlighting security concerns and instead proudly told me it was the banks drive to be environmentally friendly by saving paper.

They really have no idea, and ss they say in the USA, go figure.

Got a message from SCB that the app will be down from midnight to 6am on the 10th and I'm assuming an update to it will be coming shortly.

No mention of pics yet, that will probably follow.
