Thousands of LGBTQ+ people join Pride celebrations in Bangkok

Many thousands of Thai and foreign LGBTQ+ people joined Pride celebrations in Bangkok today (Sunday), to celebrate gender diversity and advocate for their freedom and fundamental rights, such as gender recognition, same-sex marriage, the legalisation of sex work and equal social welfare.

Officially called “Bangkok Pride 2023”, the parade kicked off at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (BACC) at Pathumwan intersection and ends at the Central World shopping centre in the Ratchaprasong area.

Their parade represented the six themes of this year’s event, namely Gender X, My Body My Choice, Chosen Family, Peace & Earth, Equal Rights to Health and Security.

The parade will conclude with a “Pride Stage” at 8pm, which will feature performances by Thai drag-queens and a special concert by LGBTQ+ artists.

Many politicians also participated the parade, includingBangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat, Pheu Thai leader Cholnan Srikaew and Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The U.S., Danish and Finnish Ambassadors to Thailand also took part for their first time.

Chadchart said that the parade shows that people are more willing to embrace those who are different, not only from the LGBTQ+ community, but also those with disabilities and those who hold different views.

“If we can all accept the differences and diversity, I believe that our society will be happier and will become a better place in which to live.”

Chadchart added that this year’s pride parade is the first step to becoming the host city for World Pride 2028. He suggested that many of the draft laws related to improving the livelihoods of the LGBTQ+ community should be passed as a priority first.

Meanwhile, Pita told Thai PBS World that the Move Forward party aims to legalise marriage equality within 100 days, if their coalition becomes the next government. He also said that this year’s pride parade in Bangkok shows that the capital has the potential to become the first Asian city to host World Pride 2028.

“It’s already on the parliamentary agenda [to pass the marriage equality bill],” he said. “I think we are gathered here together to send the message to the world that love wins, and here, in Thailand, we view diversity as a strength. We are ready to organise pride events at an international level.”

The U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, Robert F. Godec, says he is “thrilled” to join the Bangkok Pride Parade today, while describing it as “very special, colourful, powerful and moving”.

“It is so important that we come out and say that it is critical that everyone should be able to love who they love and be with who they want to be with. This message to our world, freedom and pride, is extraordinarily powerful, and I just love this energy, vibrancy and the power of this moment here in Bangkok.”

Not surprised it was well attended. Most Thai men are two or three drinks away from poofterdom. I expect the septic and English rice queens put in a good showing.

    Bars dome a roaring trade.

One place I know that can only fit 25 pax, turned the stools upside down and could accommodate 100 quite comfortably.

^^ Strangely enough Bogon, this morning I've been going through percentages with the daughter to help her prepare for her maths exams.

I saw your comment and like to apply maths to the real world to make it more meaningful for her.

I asked the daughter that if Bogon's bar gets five-legged stools, what would be the maximum potential percentage the customer base could increase by?

    A = 25%

^ Struggle to make sense of percentages! around 2% of the world is LBGT whatever - yet 101% of the world is being subjected to a constant barrage of LGBTQ crap, makes no sense? unless they have ulterior motives

All hail to tolerance live and let live, as an obvious foreigner here , possibly the whitest man to have spent years in the jungle, it reflects the Thai mentality, that charming insouciant balance between Mai pen lie/I couldn't care less, indifference and tolerance?

When we see such peaceful frolics in Moscow and Beijing we will know the world is at ease with itself.
Embracing change does not mean we have to be less ourself.

If I thought you really believed it and not brilliantly trolling I would be surprised, perhaps you may prefer to show us on the doll what the Thai Ladyman did to you?

Absolutely agree. AP2. Enough already. Look if you are gay...then shut up and be gay. If you wanna be a woman but have a package, get your junk cut off and STFU. Same if you are a man and want a cameltoe. Lop off the junk and again STFU. But just because those folks have taken a different personal preference on who they want to be, that does not give them special privileges. They can all fuck and die as far as I am concerned.

Tolerant Thai? Are you fucking insane now David or have you consumed a moron pill with your cornflakes.

For fuck’s sake, if you even look like you are going to crack Somchai’s rice bowl or gain any advantage over the fucker he’ll cut your bollocks off quicker than piglet’s nutcracker.

And no matter how long you stay as a retiree you rarely get PR.

And if there is a fucking pandemic you can bet your bottom dollar someone in the government will say it’s spread by farang, in much the same way all the mafia gangs in Thailand are foreigners.

Thai are tolerant as long as they are gaining an advantage and getting their way. Otherwise, they’re selfish, greedy, devious, underhanded, hypocritical and deceptive racist tossers.

It is called fresh air stroll in a small village , insanity diagnosis would IMHO living anywhere near the planet's most infamous brothel through choice , we cannot blame the pie vendors , ass renters or bucket vendors earning a living.

As for human behaviour I have found it similar worldwide , while poorer rural people have more time to share and some connection with weather food and and natural cycles of birds fish and animals. I may add I have been robbed each time in England but that doesn't make me Anglophobe most folks there are fine. I hope your negative view of life can be improved via fresh air friends , many swear by a weasal enema (don't leave it up there)

But that's part of a small thread on TD Armstrong. This LBGTQWTSA or whatever they want to call themselves has gone to far. I don't care what preferences people make or do. Their choice but quit demanding I accept it. I don't. I never will.

My liberal view too of what consenting adults do in private

The pride thing seems theatrical but of course as many black people will confirm some societies , religions discriminate over jobs housing health care. In many African and Arab states being gay can lead to punishments as harsh as death. That experience is mirrored by other excluded groups , signs No Blacks No Dogs No Irish were common when I was a kid in London, same as indigenous peoples Jews, Armenian and others had in other places UK has moved on you only need to look at the cabinet

I also disagree with self identification that is allowing biological men access to women and girl's spaces, sports prisons and changing rooms

Absolutely. What people do is their business. But this has gone a bit over the top now. They parade it around like it is some special lifestyle and we all have to accept it. They need to understand, many don't. I don't have parades because I'm heterosexual.

I am against all of that and it should be banned uniformly. Just because some guy says he is now a woman does not and should not give him rights to enter women/girls spaces. Same with women who think they are now a male. Same rules apply. You cut stuff off, then live with people staring at you. They did that to themselves.

Personally I thinks all just a bunch a media crap. I was just in the states and unfortunately it makes headlines and news every single day. It shouldn't. You were born a male, you are a male. Same with female. Just cause you cut off or add something doesn't change it.

I rather thought the more infamous brothels are to be found in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Angeles City in Phi, that town in Bangladesh, Rio De Janeiro, any northern English town/city but maybe your personal knowledge of Pattaya’s whores is more extensive.

In my experience up country village life is a torment of tedium only alleviated by gossip, envy, malice and regret culminating in personal feuds, casual acrimony and sullen isolation. They’re generally so ignorant and stupid they have no other option but to pry and gossip and fall out like children.

Thai rural dystopia is the worst.

    • "Good guys go to heaven, bad guys go to Pattaya” reads the popular slogan on t-shirts flogged to tourists .

If so, there are plenty of bad guys: every year more than one million visitors a year pass through the Thai resort known as the world's sex capital.

Many men are drawn there by one thing only.
Pattaya has a reported 27,000 prostitutes, roughly one for every five people living permanently in the east-coast city that has been likened to a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah.

We came out of MBK, on Sunday, right in the middle of it. My Americanized kids were a bit shocked by the spectacle. Took some photos. When I figure out how to upload from my phone, I’ll post them.

What is the extent of your up country experience? Specifically, where and for how long?

It should if you are in a group that feels they are being denied their rights based on religious belief, race or who they chose to love. The purpose of parades and demonstrations is to get media coverage to make public aware and sway public opinion to change laws to address inequality.

Stronly agree. I would argue allowing trans folks to do this discriminates against non trans folks.

And additionally Norts, would that be pre or post acid dropping days?

I can only comment on my experience here but being I routinely ( sadly) have to visit Pattaya for business and then get to return to my urban Upcountry life, there simply is no comparison. Upcountry life is quiet, neighbors are all friendly, no congestion or traffic. No busses jammed up with tourists spitting and tossing garbage all over, no riff raff, stabbings, drunken tourists puking on sidewalks, Immigration always empty and they all know me by now so it's a hello and in and out.

Where SA lives is all that Pattaya has to offer. Hookers, fights, murders, wrecks, rude tourists, bus loads of people constantly who toss garbage all over. Things over priced, locals scam anywhere and anytime they can.

I fully support the gatherings but that is not what's happening. These transgenders are making news because they were Male and now by some miraculous discovery found out in their mind that they are female and want to compete in women's sports and gain access to woman spaces. It is just wrong. That's what's making the news Norts

What 'makes the news' is a very small part of the issue of gender identity.

If your biggest concern on the issue is related to sports then I suggest another Bloody Mary and a re-run of a football game.
