Australian Man Faces Several Legal Charges After Road Rage Incident in Phuket

An Australian driver is facing two legal charges after a road rage incident in which he destroyed a minivan’s side mirror in Wichit, Mueang Phuket.

The minivan driver Mr. Monnapan told police the sedan driven by a foreigner immediately swerved in front of his minivan and suddenly braked. The minivan driven by Mr. Monnapan almost collided with the sedan.

After that the minivan and the sedan stopped at a red light. Monnapan got out of his vehicle and walked to the sedan to ask the driver why he drove so carelessly but the sedan driver allegedly tried to crash into him.

Monnapan got back into his minivan and drove when the light turned green. The two drivers, however, continued to harass each other with Monnapan honking his horn continuously and then both vehicles stopped on the road side before the foreigner hit and smashed the minivan’s side mirror and then fled.

The Wichit Police Chief Colonel Chatree Chookaew told the Phuket Express on Tuesday (May 30th) that the male foreigner in the video is identified as an Australian man (Police did not give his name and age). He was called to the police station but his Dubai-based friend who was with him during the incident fled out of fear of legal repercussions.

The Australian man is facing two charges which are damaging other people’s property and threatening others. The Australian man was bailed. However on May 31st police will file the case to a district court.

The Australian man reportedly admitted that he was angry after the minivan driver honked his horn repeatedly while chasing after him. The Australian man also stated that the minivan driver was in his opinion the initial aggressor, having got out of his vehicle to confront the foreigner.

Australian Man Fined 10,000 Baht and Pays 40,000 Baht for Damages After Road Rage Incident in Phuket

An Australian man was fined 10,000 baht and paid 40,000 baht for damages after a road rage incident with a minivan in Wichit, Mueang Phuket. He also faced imprisonment for two months but he received suspension of his imprisonment sentence with one year probation.

The Phuket Provincial Police told the Phuket Express on Wednesday (May 31st) that the Australian man was identified as MR. NAVALE LACHLAN and his friend riding with him was identified as MR. HAIDER RUBAY, an Emirati national (United Arab Emirates). The Phuket Express noted that Phuket Police originally said Mr. LACHLAN, Australian, was the driver, but then corrected that statement.

The Phuket Provincial Police told the Phuket Express that Mr. RUBAY, an Emirati national, was the actual driver but had fled immediately back to his country on May 29th the night after the incident after learning of possible legal action.

The Phuket Kwaeng Court has already judged the case. Mr. LACHLAN, Australian, who damaged the minivan side mirror, faced imprisonment for two months but he received suspension of his imprisonment sentence with one year probation. He was fined 10,000 baht and has to pay 40,000 baht to the minivan driver for the damages.
