Uproar over shameful exploitation by taxi drivers at Muang Thong Thani convention cen

Taxi drivers operating at the Muang Thong Thani convention centre during the Thaifex international trade fair have come under heavy criticism on social media for overcharging passengers, rejecting Thai passengers and refusing to use their meters for both Thai and foreign passengers.

Some of the drivers have charged up to 5,000 baht for a trip from Muang Thong Thani to the Silom or the Sukhumvit areas.

A Thai PBS reporter spoke with Pakpoom, one of those who posted on social media about the actions of the cabbies, who said that a Thai passenger, who tried to hail a taxi to take him from a car park at Muang Thong Thani to the site of the trade fair, a distance of about one kilometre, was asked to pay a 300 baht and the driver refused to use the meter, adding that numerous passengers used the motorcycle taxi service instead.

Thai PBS news team went to Muang Thong Thani to investigate and confirmed that the allegations were true. Some cabbies did not switch on the “unoccupied” sign while waiting to pick up foreign passengers, hoping to overcharge them for trips back to the inner city.

The management of Muang Thong Thani admitted to Thai PBS that every time a major event is held at the exhibition venue, taxi drivers take advantage of passengers, especially foreigners, by refusing to use their meters and demanding exorbitant fees for trips into the city, charging up to 5,000 baht one way.

An executive said that the management will ask the police and the Land Transport Department to station officers at the venue to crack down on dishonest cabbies.

A Land Transport Department official said that passengers who were extorted by cabbies or who came across cabbies who refused to use meters can file complaints via the department’s 1584 hotline.

A manager in charge of managing public transport services at the venue said that his officials are ready to provide information about taxi fares to passengers but, in the case of foreigners from whom exorbitant fares are demanded, it is up to the passenger whether they will accept or reject the fare demanded.

The penalty for not using meters or overcharging passengers is a fine not exceeding 2,000 baht.

Well I mean how were they supposed to predict that, the poor dears. It must have come out of the blue.

Translation: He gets good money deciding which taxis get to join the farang fuckover.

Stupid place for an exhibition centre. I never go there. No BTS, parking hopeless, traffic a nightmare. et al.

Bang Na by contrast is much better.

Years ago (might well be the same nowadays), the Phuket scum taxi drivers were a nightmare at the Aquaria - they even physically blocked me and the wife getting on a bus; the bus driver was petrified of them, so just drove off... Yeah, "really nice" people some of these taxi drivers; I was always under the impression that a fair number of them are policemen on their second job hence why they got away with so much.

    Cycling should be banned!!!

I have only had one Taxi driver attempt to scam me in of all places, Pattaya. Go Figure. I was out to dinner with colleagues and they had to catch their flight back to the US so I said rather then the Van having to take me back to the hotel, I would catch a Cab. So I hailed a cab and the guy wanted 1000 bht to go about 4km. I said NO Way. He got pissed as I started to walk away. Then said 750. I kept walking. Hopped on a Song Teuw for 35bht and it got me close enough and I walked last .5km.

In BKK with my wife, I always laugh because before she waves for a cab she says. Stand away so I can get the fair price not the foreigner price. So she flags one down then I get up and come over after he has agreed to turn on the meter.

Sadly so many are just plain thieves.

I pissed myself laughing when the US Navy had enough of the Phuket bandits trying to stiff its matelots and told Phuket to fuck off as an R&R stop.

Sadly, I think they have relented now.

A friend if mine came from Australia to see this convention. He was asked for 5000 baht to go to Asoke. It was his first trip to the exhibition and has said it will be his last. Things like this hurt tourism in Thailand and Im surprised the authorities are so blaze about it.

Bangkok Taxi Driver Fined and License Suspended for Overcharging Taiwanese Passenger

The Land Transport Department has fined a Bangkok taxi driver Bt2,000 and suspended his driving license for 90 days after he was found guilty of overcharging a Taiwanese passenger.

Driver’s Confession and Viral TikTok Video Lead to Penalties

The Bangkok taxi driver, identified as Kittipong, was summoned by the department’s transport inspection officials, where he confessed to the offense. The incident occurred when Kittipong picked up the Taiwanese passenger from Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi province, with the intended destination being Bangpho MRT Station.

Fare Discrepancy and Viral Video Spark Outrage

Despite the distance being approximately 13 kilometers, the driver refused to use the meter and demanded an exorbitant Bt2,000, far exceeding the standard fare of around Bt160.

The passenger recorded the entire trip, including the conversation with the driver and his improper uniform, and posted it on TikTok. The video quickly went viral, drawing negative comments from netizens criticizing the driver’s actions.

License Suspension and Warning for Future Offenses

As a consequence of the offense, the Land Transport Department imposed a fine of Bt2,000 on the driver and suspended his driving license for 90 days. The department further warned that if Kittipong were to repeat similar offenses in the future, his driving license would be permanently revoked.

Department Encourages Public to Report Taxi Offenses

To combat such incidents, the Land Transport Department urges the public to report any offenses Bangkok taxi drivers commit. Individuals witnessing misconduct are encouraged to file complaints by calling 1584 and providing the necessary details, such as the taxi’s registration plate number.
