Three DSI officials surrender to face bribe-taking charges

Three officials of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) have offered to surrender to the police this afternoon (Tuesday), to acknowledge charges of allegedly breaking into the residence of the consul-general of the Republic of Nauru and demanding bribes from illegal Chinese immigrants there.

The voluntary surrender follows the issuance of arrest warrants by the Criminal Court after they were charged with falsifying official documents, using the fake documents and malfeasance in office.

The DSI officials allegedly took about 10 million baht in bribes from the Chinese, who fled the country after their release by the DSI officials.

Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police chief, said that five DSI officials were arrested and charged.

He said that police have not found any evidence to suggest that the DSI director-general was involved in the bribery.

So I'm guessing they were some fairly high level criminals then.
