Thread: Russian Tourist Missing After Being Struck By a Wave While Taking a Selfie

Three Russian tourists have been rescued while another is still missing after one of them was hit by a wave and washed out into the sea by waves while taking a selfie at the Prom Thep Cape in Rawai.


Emergency responders were notified of the incident on Friday (May 12th) at the end of the Prom Thep Cape. They and the Phuket Express arrived at the scene to find three foreign tourists floating in the sea. They were quickly rescued from the water.

hey told emergency responders that they were Russians on holiday. They went into the sea to help their friend who was doing a selfie taking session before being hit by a wave and being washed out into the sea. Their friend disappeared into the ocean before the Russian tourists called out for locals for help and a search was launched.


The search was ongoing as of press time and the name of the Russian tourists were being withheld by relevant law enforcement as of press time.

nothing new about russians being in prohibited areas.

Can't protect against stupid. From what I recall, you have to go out of your way to get to the waters edge there. Crawl under/over railing/fences...signs posted no to do it...but many people just disregard.

Always lots of people clambering down the hill off the tracks there. I've paddled a kayak in the area - on a flat calm day - and was surprised at the currents - it looks calm but the water is moving quite a bit, especially around teh shore/ islands.

(and yes I do know my way around moving seas - having grown up surfing in the SW of Western Australia)

Most of us have done some dumb things when young. Hell, some of us never stop. That doesn't take away from the fact of another life sadly taken and a family will be grieving for a silly mistake that many of us luckily have gotten away with.
