126 tonnes of sulfuric acid bound for Myanmar impounded at Laem Chabang port

Suradej Trongsirivibool, the customs chief at Laem Chabang deep-sea port, said that the 126 tonnes of sulfuric, worth 12.6 million baht and which were in transit, have been impounded because the importer could not produce the required documentation concerning the transit of dangerous goods.

Jullapong Thaveesri, director-general of the Industrial Works Department, said today (Tuesday) that the dangerous chemical was shipped from India to Myanmar via Thailand.

He added that the importer must seek permission from his department for the import of dangerous chemicals, to prevent them from being used as precursors in the production of illegal narcotics.

Since last October, customs officials at Laem Chabang port have seized 220 tonnes of sodium cyanide destined for Myanmar, 26 tonnes of opium seeds and 5,600kg of dried opium leaves.

I assume this "seeking permission" involves some "paperwork".
