TIME Magazine Lists Phuket and Isan Among World’s Greatest Places for 2023

Phuket and the Northeastern provinces of Thailand have been included on the TIME magazine’s list of “The World’s Greatest Places of 2023”.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the list, which showcases 50 extraordinary destinations to explore, describes Phuket as one of Thailand’s most visited places and is known for its famed beaches. Phuket has increased its family appeal with the grand opening of Carnival Magic, a culturally-focused theme park last September. The island province is also drawing more visitors to its uncrowded countryside with an impressive landscape of modern luxury lodges.

The TIME list mentions Isan for the region’s diverse and delicious culinary options. It also mentions that those who venture to this off-the-beaten-path region of Thailand teeming with rice fields are rewarded with national parks, temple ruins, and Michelin-recommended restaurants. Last year marked the 60th anniversary of Thailand’s first national park, Khao Yai, which sits largely in Nakhon Ratchasima province and is home to elephants, gibbons, and Asian black bears.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn stated that having not just one, but two destinations, in this prestigious compilation of worldwide destinations is an honor and something that everyone in the country can be proud of. He went on to say that Thailand is ready to welcome travelers from all around the world as part of the "Visit Thailand Year 2023: Incredible New Chapters" campaign."

Just glancing at that first page, Sumuay is very good indeed. Good Everything (known locally as The White House) Meuh. VT: I don't care how famous it is, double meuh.

The preposterousness of these bumptiously fatuous people knows no bounds.

They forgot the teeming and diverse range of plastic crap and litter which can be readily viewed alongside every single road and waterway.

I was looking at videos of vloggers in Phuket at the moment, and it looks like a nightmare with so many people..all the hotels are booked out in Patong and you can barely move.
I'm sure there are some nice spots, but most of the main beaches are overrun, especially with all the Russians moving in.

I live out of town, out of village, it is rural here. Every morning I drag Miss Piggy out for some exercise, about 2km out and, surprisingly enough, about the same back. We stick to the concrete soi and I sometimes have a little bet with myself whether or not there will be any stretch greater than 20m where I don't pass a plastic bag. Usually there isn't. There are not twenty effin roadside metres in the depths of rural Isan that are free of plastic waste. Mostly food packaging. It is frankly shocking.
I am carless today and I'm not walking 3km to the village in this heat so I sent out for noodles. A plastic bag of noodles and a plastic bag of soup. With dry chilli in a plastic bag and sugar in a plastic bag and vinegar in a plastic bag and disposable chopsticks (bamboo - hurrah!) wrapped in a plastic packet (boo!) Did I mention the vegetables, in a plastic bag? All of these things were thoughtfully delivered together, in a larger plastic bag. There seems no hope for us.

So some Time writer got a freebee to a Phuket resort and decided not to call it an overdeveloped, rip-off shithole.

But they do have some serious skills tying up those plastic bags full of steaming soup etc .with a rubber band. Impressive stuff. Or maybe I'm just easily amused

I’ll do a bike ride every morning (when in Thailand) and stick to the rural areas (less vehicle traffic). Canals and roadways littered with trash.

I'm waiting for my Isaan wife to ask if I've got the Time.

Because now I can say, 'No, but I've got some Rosemary!'

It's a laugh a minute at our house.

Esan is of course deservedly famous alongside Lorraine and Bakewell for its warm tarts, as for Phuket the highlight seems to be PAG's fine food, I spent one night in a hotel there run by a mad woman escaping a "HAM" I think it was the " CANDY WOULD RESORT"
