Foreigner Drinking Beer at Chiang Mai Temple Sparks Heated Debate

Pictures of a foreigner carrying and drinking beer at a Chiang Mai temple during Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-visit cha’s have sparked debate online, raising concerns about the Prime Minister’s security detail.

Images released on Saturday show an Asian man holding an open can of beer and two more in a clear plastic bag, just meters away from the premier’s security personnel at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Others clearly show him drinking from cans on the grounds of the famous temple in Muang district.

Social media users wondered how someone managed to bring alcoholic beverages onto temple grounds, which is illegal. They also inquired as to why the prime minister’s bodyguards appeared unconcerned about the violation.

According to a temple source, while strict security is usually present to deal with such incidents, local guards were scaled back and assigned to specific stations during Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-visit cha’s to make way for his personal security personnel.

The temple source told the Bangkok Post that a lapse in monitoring was possible due to the special circumstances of the day, but that stricter precautions would be taken. Nearby vendors will also be reminded that buyers are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages onto the temple grounds.

Does this illegal to drink on temple grounds thing apply to all temples or just famous temples?

I'd assume its not the prime minister’s bodyguards job, and that they wouldn't allow a silly distraction that could lead them to not be protecting the PM.

It's not that he's (just) dim, it's that he'll automatically side against anything you post.

Amongst the worst drinking I've ever seen in Isaan was at a Temple during the evenings as part of the four day funeral 'rites' ?

This was the main reason I long ago told the wife that I'd never go to an 'alcohol' funeral involving her family.

Sadly, they don't happen often enough.

I've been to some incredible events at temples as well. Gambling, drinking and smoking, all happening on hallowed ground. The monks never were around though, I'm sure they were asleep at o'dark 30, not changed in to regular clothes so they wouldn't be caught having fun.

One Song Kran, a Thai fellow drove myself and another farang around from temple to temple sampling the parties. My gf at the time tracked me down and rescued me before I passed out.

These were small temples out in the country though....

I don't know, cyrille . . . it was never mentioned that it was established in the first place . . . which was the reason for my question in the first place.

So, when my question was asked right after the article post I am somehow 'siding against' Tax's possible reply? Speaking of dim . . .

Why do you need to drag a thread down every time you post? Simple question asked and the nyour vacuous answer . . . followed by your usual crap supported by the admin-gone-spazz.

    Well done

The Thai addiction to hypocrisy is of course quite nauseating, and one of the main reasons why I detest their society, but they do hate getting called out on it.
They're full of shit and this crap about their temples is just more social stratification preserving the status of the monks.

It could have been worse...it could have been at a Catholic church. Everyone know what priests are like....

Don’t forget the drunk fest the monk ordination ceremony turns into after breakfast is served …
