Six underage girls rescued from commercial sex trade in Phuket

Thai officials, in coordination with representatives of Operation Underground Railroad (OUR), rescued six underage girls, including those under 15, in raids of a bar and a hotel on Patong Beach in Phuket on Wednesday night.

Two women working in the Velvet bar, located on the Bangla walking street on Patong Beach, were arrested by provincial administration officials. They were charged with human trafficking for allegedly procuring young girls for prostitution and operating a bar without a license.

The raids on the two night spots were the result of information provided by OUR, a non-profit international organisation dedicated to the fight against human trafficking, indicating that the Velvet bar was allegedly a front for prostitution catering to foreign tourists.

Based on the information, the Provincial Administration Department sent undercover agents to investigate. They confirmed the OUR’s information.

The six underage girls were found in the hotel next to the Velvet bar. All of them will be sent to a children’s shelter for rehabilitation before they are to be returned to their families.

Yes, because returning them to the families that probably sold them in the first place is a cracking idea.

Or perhaps it's sadder that there aren't equivalent NGO's to work on the far more prevalent Thai side of the child sex business. Probably because of who the major players are.

Foreign Owner Flees Thailand After Bar Raid in Patong Uncovers Child Sex Exploitation, Suspected Network in Pattaya and Bangkok

A foreign owner has fled to a nearby country after a bar on Bangla Road was raided where minors who were victims of child sexual exploitation were uncovered. ฺ

Big Joke, Thailand’s most well known cop Surachate Hakparn, said the bar has many networks and connections in Pattaya and Bangkok.

‘Big Joke’, the Assistant Commissioner of Police Surachate Hakparn, arrived in Phuket today (March 18th) to follow up on the case.

‘Big Joke’ told the Phuket Express that the bar is related to another bar network in Bangkok and Pattaya. The bar might have been operated as a nominee in which Thai people registered for them with some foreign shareholders. It was also reported that the main foreign owner was married to a Thai national.

The real foreign owner has now fled from Thailand to Laos, said Big Joke, who commonly goes by his nickname gained due to his sense of humor and love of the Thai meal Jok.

Thai police are continuing the investigation with the other country where he fled to and following up on customers who used the services of the bar, specifically those who interacted with minors.

Police are also inspecting bars across Phuket, Pattaya, and Bangkok this weekend to ensure no venues are exploiting minors.
