Bali about to impose a bikini ban

Bali cracks down on how tourists behave and dress in proposed campaign

Bali is the one of the most popular destinations for Australians with roughly 91,000 travellers visiting the island in January this year alone.

And while most Aussies tend to be on their best behaviour, an increasing number are causing chaos and breaking local rules – and the Balinese have had enough.
What many may forget is Bali is a conservative island in a deeply religious country, but to tourists, Bali is a carefree paradise where anything goes.
But those tourists – and not just Aussies – looking to misbehave and dress inappropriately should think twice.
Bali Tourism Board chairman Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana is on the brink of launching a public campaign that will see billboards installed where customs are flouted the most – such as the more popular locations of Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Canggu, Ubud, Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Uluwatu.

Mr Adnyana said they’re currently in the “socialisation” phase of a new campaign which will aim to build awareness among visitors and educate tourists on how to behave in cultural settings.
“The point is that tourists respect Balinese cultural customs by dressing well and neatly, following in an orderly manner, carrying out traffic activities and not doing things that are outside the provisions,” he told The Bali Sun.

The proposal has been tabled and officials are now awaiting public feedback.
It will see at least 10 large billboards installed with instructions and advice in foreign languages, including English.
“Indeed, we are welcoming and accept everything. Guests are king – but don’t abuse,” Mr Adnyana said.
The tourism board said it will collaborate with influencers, tourism stakeholders and e-commerce business to help spread the message.
Angus Kidman, travel expert at Finder, said it isn’t a surprising move from the Bali Tourism Board.
“In recent years we’ve seen increasing efforts by Indonesian authorities to clamp down on unruly behaviour,” Mr Kidman told news.com.au.

Some Aussies have become infamous among locals for causing chaos and breaking local rules, earning the nickname ‘Bali bogans’. Here an Aussie man coped backlash for doing a burnout in the middle of a busy street.

“The most infamous example is the ‘bonk ban’ on unmarried couples. Authorities say that won’t apply to tourists, but it does reinforce that Indonesia takes this issue seriously.
“Good manners and respect are essential for all tourists in every destination. You’re risking a fine or even deportation if you run wild and ignore local attitudes.”
Aussies have been caught out for their rude behaviour and inappropriate outfits when visiting sacred areas in the past.
In October last year, an Aussie man was shamed online after a video emerged of him doing a burnout on a rented scooter in the middle of a busy road.
It prompted backlash with hundreds of people calling out his behaviour as “disrespectful”.

In 2019, an apprentice builder from Adelaide, made international headlines when he fly-kicked a man off his motorbike after a cocktail-induced binge resulted in allegations of assault and smashed windows.
And a tourist shared a TikTok this year saying she went to a temple and was given clothes to cover-up because, “I’m dressed like a hooker.”
It appears she was wearing just a bikini.
Meanwhile, in 2016 a young woman dressed in a bikini sparked outrage in Bali when she was photographed in a yoga pose in front of a temple.

The crackdown on “dressing well” comes as many may not understand the conservative culture, wearing skimpy clothes, and even going topless, in certain areas such as sacred temples.
The announcement comes just days after the provincial government confirmed that they had launched a dedicated task force to crack down on foreigners working illegally on the island.

Very cheap escape for Aussies. Cheaper to go to Bali from Perth than to Melbourne. Never been there and never will. The Bali bombing apparently wasnt a big enough message for some. It may be a hindu island but it is still a muslim country where anti Australia views are popular for politicians down on popularity trying to gain voter support.
Having spent time in Surabaya for work on multiple occasions, I was surprised at their negative beliefs regarding Australia (a country that has given literally billions in aid) and this was from educated people. Not just the ignorant poorly educated Islamic nutters that abound there.

It's not too much to ask not to dress like a fucking slapper or a stupid bogan when away from the beach or pool.

    Bali is 87% Hindu.

The poorly educated are the ones that think it's 87% muslim.

I was at Indonesian immigration last week for biometrics prior to visa renewal. Visiting any government office should require a modicum of respect to local culture, no matter the country.
In any Asian country, it is normal to dress with modesty and not flaunt one’s wares in a show of disrespect. It’s their country after all and we are favoured by their customs. It’s only right that we should respond accordingly.

Despite the early hour and cooler showery weather many nationalities can be seen with far too much flesh on show. To them, any minor reporting requirements are such an inconvenience, that they flaunt masses of ugly flesh and tattoos. That’s just the women, many of whom are offered the convenience of a voluminous and colorful wrap in order to cover their excesses.

This behaviour was evident in Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia. It was not restricted to any nationality, just those with no respect for our hosts.
How difficult is it to wear long pants and a shirt with a collar? No one expects a suit and tie these days, just a modicum of self respect.

Attending a Thai driving test, an Italian woman was ejected for wearing a bra only instead of a short sleeved top. She was incandescent with rage, despite a plethora of multi lingual signs prohibiting such behaviour.

Bali offers Indonesian Muslims, the opportunity to relax a rigid dress code especially were women are concerned. It might help if everyone on a motor bike wore helmets, including the Hindus who obviously adhere to religious head dress when motorcycling. So there is a small degree of local hypocrisy, but not confined to Australians.

Other nationalities including Brits, Dutch, Germans and lately, many Russians use the island for escapist holidays. The Hindu have one or more ‘religious celebrations’ every week, causing considerable chaos with traffic interrupted by pedestrian traffic. Annoying as that may be, it is their country after all. Not difficult to accept and rub along smiling. Beach wear on the beach should probably be an exception, apart from wrinkles of any nationality.

Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned.

Indonesia plans changes re beachwear that will have zero impact.

UK passes something like its sixth change to immigration laws that will never be enforceable.

Doubtless it keeps some people in work, and others merely paid.

The article refers to dressing appropriately away from the beach.

The tabloids have of course dubbed it a "bikini ban".

You can be turned away from Immigration in Thailand for wearing shorts.

So I doubt anyone is going to be changing their plans from Bali to Phuket anytime soon unless they are really stupid bogans, in which case Phuket deserves them anyway.

Perhaps they could set up an aussie shithead only area where they can all go and get tatts, hair braids, pissed and vomit over each other. Make it like a giant aussie only toilet and it can be flushed every day before the next plane-load arrives.

I think only a tiny minority of Australians cause offence. I rarely need to leave Sanur anyway, but apocryphal stories from Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta always available, replete with exaggeration.

The proximity of Australia and tourism does help with availability of a western diet. Especially top quality steaks!

They have one. It's called Kuta.

I agree. Dress appropriately and show some fucking respect. I see these kunts in vientiane, shirtless etc, it doesn't go down well with the locals it's a city not a beach. Put a fucking shirt on.

I agree too. It's having respect for their religion or cilture. I don't mind to wear a sarong, shawl or long trousers/ skirts when entering temples, or using a scarf to cover my hair if needed (hijab style).

When I went to Bali, it was during Christmas holidays. Lots of Aussies in the regular tourist spots - they were noisy.

    P.S.
As a girl, in some places, wearing skimpy or revealing clothes to go sightseeing or travelling makes you a target for sexual harassment (sad but true). I remember the story of an Australian-Chinese girl who dressed as a boy (cut her hair, minimised her breasts, etc) to avoid trouble during her solo travels in sketchier parts of the world.

I don’t recall your moobs upsetting anyone when you last visited Samui? I prefer draft beers personally. My local has a good choice of Belgian/Dutch beers and cider, including a nice dark stout on tap. Half a roast chicken and 4 draft beers is about 10 quid in English money IDR200k. It’s only 5 minutes walk from the beach. Why buy gassy bottled crap when it’s on tap and cheaper?
