PM2.5 dust levels in the atmosphere in 16 northern and north-eastern provinces have exceeded the 50-micron safety standard, but the fine dust in three areas of Chiang Mai and Lampang have reached a health-threatening level in the past 24 hours, according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD).

The PCD’s air quality report at 7am Saturday shows excessive PM2.5 in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nan, Mae Hong Son, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Mukdahan, Kalasin, Roi-et, Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket provinces.

The worst areas are in Hot and Chiang Dao districts of Chiang Mai and Mueang district of Lampang, where PM2.5 readings show 185, 136 and 108 microns respectively.

PM2.5 readings in the past 24 hours in the various regions of Thailand are:

North, 19-185 microns, with most areas exceeding the 50-micron standard level

Over 300 hotspots detected in Chiang Mai Province on Sunday

More than 300 hotspots have been detected in forests in Chiang Mai Province on Sunday and a member of the Anandamahidol Foundation Society has warned that air pollution in Thailand is expected to be worse this year than last.

Dr. Jain Charnnarong, a member of the society dedicated to solving the problem of PM2.5 in Thailand, said today(Sunday) that it is pointless for Thailand to blame its neighbours for forest fires this year because many forest fires in the country being caused by irresponsible villagers.

“One person starts a fire in a forest and the entire village suffers,” he said as he alleged that the arsonists are among the firefighting volunteers, adding that it is high time that efforts are stepped up to educate villagers about the impacts of starting forest fires to facilitate the hunting of wild animals or to burn farm waste.

The Environment and Pollution Control Office 1 reported that the levels of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son provinces range from 28 to 179 microns.

A total of 826 hotspots have been detected in the four provinces, including 375 in Chiang Mai, 139 in Chiang Rai, 173 in Mae Hong Son and 139 in Lamphun.

Bannaros Buaklee, an advisor to a non-governmental organisation focused on the improvement of air quality in Chiang Mai, said that only rain can help ease air pollution.

He cited a forecast by the Meteorological Department that a strong cold front from China, which is expected to cover Thailand’s north and north-east and the South China Sea fromFebruary 14th – 17th, will bring rain, hail and strong winds.

He said, however, that it will not bring heavy rain, but some rainfall which may ease the pollution problem temporarily.

The volunteer firefighters are accused of arson?

    jhc.

Clearly no improvement is achievable except by the weather.

It's nice to deflect the blame from CP's industrial scale burning to a few villagers but every little helps I suppose.

Air has been pretty bad in these parts. It's the silly time again where they just don't get it, nor care. Just manage it and hope some weather blows in and cleans some out. Today was 84 on that PM 2.5 scale in our area. It also hit 37c yesterday as well so nice and toasty.

The only effective manner in which this annual horror might be curtailed would be decimation.

Take one in ten of those responsible and tie them to a stake in the middle of their land and shoot them leaving the local fauna to dispose of the bodies.

It would take a full paradigm shift by both the government and the people to stop burning. The people don't care, they burn for next crops as it's their livelihood. The government doesn't follow through with stiff fines and punishment because they do not have viable and affordable solution(s) to offer the people. So in the end, it is what it is. It happens every year and will.

Interesting that while the government often point their grubby fingers at Thailand's neighbours, they judiciously avoid mentioning who is responsible for a large chunk of the burning in those countries.

Poor air conditions in northern and north-eastern Thailand on Tuesday

PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere in most areas of the north and north-east today (Tuesday) has exceeded the national safety level, according to the Centre for Air Pollution Mitigation.

The centre has advised people living in those areas to reduce their outdoor activities and to wear face masks if necessary.

Provinces in the north and north-east with excessive levels of PM2.5 today are Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nan, Mae Hong Son, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Phitsanuloke, Kamphaeng Phet, Nong Khai, Loei, Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, Nong Bua Lamphu, Sakhon Nakhon, Mukdahan, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum and Ubon Ratchathani.

PM2.5 levels in the northern provinces range from 30 to 195 microns, against the safety standard of 50 microns, while levels in north-eastern provinces range from 38-112 microns.

In Bangkok and its suburbs, PM2.5 levels today range from 12-61 microns.

For the rest of the country, the air quality is good, with the amount of PM2.5 being under 38 microns.

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department has forecast that air quality in Bangkok and its suburbs tomorrow and Thursday will improve, due to the windy conditions. From Friday onward more PM2.5 dust can be expected.
