2+ meth tablets will be treated as drug trafficking under proposed new edict

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is ready to sign a ministerial edict, which will mean that an individual found in possession of more than one methamphetamine tablet will be treated as a drug trafficker, instead of an addict.

Once the edict is signed, it will be sent to the cabinet for approval and then published in the Royal Gazette prior to enforcement.

Anutin said that the reduction in the amount of meth tablets in the possession of an individual, from 15 or more to two or more, to be regarded as a trafficking offense has been discussed extensively among the agencies concerned.

Regarding the argument that the lower limit may result in the overcrowding of prisons, the public health minister said that such concerns are irrelevant, noting that the law must be made tougher to deal with the problem.

Nonetheless, he said the Ministry must find more money for the rehabilitation of drug addicts.

Under the current narcotics law, possession of more than 15 methamphetamine pills is regarded as possession with intent to traffic and the penalties range from four years to life imprisonment and/or a fine from 400,000 to 5,000,000 baht.

Those who possess fewer than 15 tablets are currently regarded as “patients”, and will be sent for rehabilitation.

It would be better for the police to stop taking bribes rather than making the law stricter. I know several cases where the police reduced the claimed amount in possession to below 15 following payment.

I guess bribing will have to be only one, off the hook, or a different crime that is a lesser degree...like bribing a law enforcement officer

This new law is vile. School kids will be at risk from this stupid law. 15 seems a better threshold.

No. 3 or 4 pills isn't trafficking. Kids or anyone could easily buy that many for their own use.

considering the BIB have been instrumental in the trade, its distribution networks and cross border trafficking its a little late now the cost of a pill has dropped from c200+thb to a few thb over the last 10-15 years and the kids can buy 2 and still have lunch money if they have any appetite left - its all a bit late

The prisons in Thailand are an abomination but as an illustration of the Thai medieval disregard for human rights they cannot be bettered.
Savages, really, and quite stupid given that most users take more than one speed pill on average for a hit whether it is swallowed or smoked. So, the great Thai intellectual that is Anutiin is going to imprison all the tens of thousands of users that populate the country nationally.
Maybe he might do better to pass an edict that all police and armed forces personnel involved in drug trafficking will face a mandatory death sentence.

Christ you are so fucking naive.
My first score of speed was ten dexedrine from a Geylang dealer when I was 15. Moved onto methedrine which was a bigger buzz but the comedown was so heavy I quit using it. Couldn’t sleep and had trouble doing my homework. Used ganja instead which was much better.
    All before I was 17.

Imagine if you were a teacher who found a kid with 10 pills. The kid might even be a very minor supplier. Many teachers would destroy all the pills bar one so the kid and his family aren't exposed to the law or to the need to bribe the police. And then refer the kid to any suitable drug program. Many cops might even do the same.

I thought other countries were now moving more to a public health rather than policing approach in dealing with illicit drugs at the smallest end of the supply chain.

Yes, but there is money to be made.
