Heavy fines imposed for failing to stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings

Motorists and motorcyclists in Thailand are being reminded that they face a fine of up to 4,000 baht, instead of 1,000 baht, if they fail to stop for a pedestrian to cross a road on zebra crossing, under an amended land traffic law which has recently come into force.

Also enforceable under the amended law is the licence point deduction system, under which a motorist or a motorcyclist will have points deducted from the full 12 points, in accordance with the traffic violation committed.

The fines for other violations are now:

4,000 baht for speeding, up from 1,000 baht
4,000 baht for jumping red light
2,000 baht for driving in the opposite lane, up from 500 baht
2,000 baht for not wearing a seat belt while driving, up from 500 baht

The tougher penalties, especially for failing to stop at a zebra crossing for pedestrians, were introduced after a tragic incident last year, when a doctor was killed on a zebra crossing on Phaya Thai Road by a big bike.

As if the Thai were capable of honouring any fucking highway code enshrined in law or otherwise. The fuckers jump red lights like we have hot dinners. Zebra crossings are merely street decoration and not usually maintained as the faded stripes would indicate. Also, it’s a cultural thing with these idiots. They can’t use roundabouts because they are too impatient to give way, why should Somchai in his Mercedes wait for a fucking noodle man in his jalopy to pass, and similarly why should far more important drivers have to give way for fucking mere pedestrians.

A few years ago I was nearly killed on Pattaya Beach Road when I stepped onto a crossing after the road traffic light had turned red. A truck sped through and missed me by a fraction. The thing is, not only did the truck not stop, not even one vehicle stopped all the time that light was red. Years later I don't suppose it is any better. I don't go there any more.
This really would not be a difficult law to enforce.

I foresee deaths if people think these fucking idiots are suddenly all going to start giving way to pedestrians at Zebra crossings. No chance, none, zero, zip, nada.

If they dont care about some pedestrians death on their conscience I doubt an extra few baht on a fine will make them more wary.

I don't think it's just Pattaya where you need to look right, left, right... 95% of those living in Isarn villages won't even possess a driving licence

I remember paying for the wife's driving test. Didn't realise at the time the 5000 baht was for the bribe.
It started raining on her test and she didn't even know how to turn the fukkin wipers on but passed with flying colours

That new maximum 4000 baht fine will be for running over a hiso.
It'll only be a few hundred baht for mowing down a soi dog or a farang

The problem is if I'm in the left lane and stop to let someone cross from left to right the vehicle in the right hand lane is probably not going to stop and plough into them this making me late.

I seem to remember there was an initiative a few years ago where foreign tourists in Bangkok were given flags to hold up when using zebra crossings to cross the roads outside their hotels. Within a week a Norwegian couple (I think) had held up their flags, stepped out on to the zebra crossing, and both were killed.

If traffic doesn't stop at zebra crossings they are better off removed as the false sense of security turns them into death traps.

I think that Westerners find it very hard to drive through a zebra crossing when pedestrians are waiting to cross. Certainly in Norway to hit someone on a crossing is immediate jail. Occasionally I stop at a crossing in downtown Korat, usually to let an old gal outside a market to cross with her trolley of produce.

Firstly, I risk being rear-ended as no other b@stard has even considered stopping, and then, after the old gal has got over her amazement of someone actually stopping, and then wai-ed me, she will get stranded in front of my car as traffic in the lanes to the left and right continue to speed past.

Stopping at zebra crossings in Thailand can get really dangerous.

Ah this.... happens all the time.

I put an arm out to signal to the people in the right lane to slow down and it's usually the motosais and salengs that fly past without a care in the world.

Utter fucking idiots and only enforcement will do anything.

Au contraire. Losing beer money will probably have far more of an impact.

Curiously enough, I think you were right that Nongbua had no pedestrian crossings - until last week they painted one outside the market.

In the case of my Pattaya near miss, it wasn't only a painted crossing, it was light controlled and no b*st*rd stopped for the red light. Not one. That isn't hard to fix.

Yeah, there is no money to be made not enforcing any laws Jeff.

    That's why people ignore them.

Any copper stood at any one of dozens of crossings around the moat in Chiang Mai with a video camera could write hundreds of tickets, if not more, per day, all backed up with evidence.

A profit sharing scheme would encourage them to do their jobs.

The only problem with that, of course, is the "sharing".
