Keeping Track of Bangkok Trains for old "Buffers'

Saw this notice which isn't the simplest rather like their needlessly complex web booking.

Not sure I'll ride SRT until they new C Rai line links to China probaly in 22nd century, but Sloppee or was it Laze Harder promise my James Bond jetpack will arrive by then, it's out for delivery .

Well don't stop your coupling or shoot the messenger.

If you want to know how it should be done

checkout CDG Amsterdam Schipol Wien Schwechat , Kastrup Kobenhavn or virtually any German city .

I regularly use those plus Narita F am main, Munchen and Dusseldorf

Nice clean fast Inter city trains right in the Airport. In Germany through ticketing sometimes though not as reliable as you may imagine, my Berliner express to Prague was cancelled with 30m notice and 2 hour wait for next in Dresden HBF last year and similar at Dortmund earlier.

The new Chinese trains in Laos are sleek but Zero grog and most stations miles from town and ticketing tricky for foreign cards, ticket collection according to a friend who came to me that route last month

Athough not to same level Gatwick, Manchester have long distance trains in the airport to places I like to Go like Cambridge and Chitty -on-Trent on the Crewe Riviera, means you can avoid Madchester and it's glum footy fans and "Tram Spotters"

This should probably be attached to Backspin's Don Mueang v Suvarnabhumi travel thread, but for a bit of enlightenment I did this a matter of weeks ago if you're thinking about how to get from town to Don Mueang or use these almost incomprehensible maps.

We were dropped off at Mo Chit BTS in a van anyway so we took the MRT to Bang Sue from Chatuchak. From Bang Sue we took the airport line to DM (or our hotel which was a couple of stops before). That day it was free, so it was a good move.

I wanted to try it, and it was worthwhile cos we were up there anyway, but if you're in central Bangkok, just take a taxi to DM. Not worth the hassle at the moment until it's a direct BTS line.

    You mean 'Bang Sue' บางซื่อ?

I wager that 100% of tourist whities and 99% of expat whities don't pronounce บางซื่อ anything close to correctly.

A tip as you are both illiterate and unable to speak Thai. It's not pronounced as 'Sue'. :-)

My missus and I had this debate en route. Despite not being Thai, but being from the region, she won.

There is a "Sue" there though.

    Sue-er, no?

Krung Thep Aphiwat begins first full day as Thailand’s rail hub
    SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2023

Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in Bangkok (formerly Bang Sue Grand Station) began its first full day as Thailand’s national rail hub on Friday after 52 long-distance services were transferred from the century-old Hua Lamphong Station.

The new 34-billion-baht Bangkok terminus in Chatuchak district is now the hub for all long-distance trains running to the North, Northeast and South of the country. Only 14 long-distance services to the East are still using Hua Lamphong.

SRT and Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) are providing free shuttle buses between the two stations to help facilitate commuters during the transition period. Buses leave every 30 minutes starting at 4.30am with the last service at 11pm.

^^ Unfortunately it's one of the vowel sounds that doesn't exist in English. Or any European language that I know of.

One of my Thai teachers, that was/is a real cutie, says it's one of the pooping sound vowels, the sounds a person makes when pushing out a hard poop. Her words not mine.

Is it not the schwa sound at the end of Sue? Or, having been away for a while, is it the sound after the initial "s" that I am missing?

    Educate me, Lulu.

The new one is Bang Sue (since renamed).

The old central station was Hualamphong.

or if you are wishing to be correct สถานีหัวลำโพง Hua Lamphong

Not wishing to derail your coupling, I'd stick to fishplates between sleepers and inter bogey if "Going all the way"

Lanna folk used to sigh that the emigres to Krung Thep would enter Lamphun Lampang tunnels never to be seen again with echoes of the poor emigrants to Boston or Sydney Ducks in San Francisco who pre Skype and Instagram would never see their loved ones again.

Yes the sara (vowel) above the consonant (saw so) is a dipthong with no equivalent sound in English and therefore hard to pronounce especially for us illiterates who can't speak or read Thai.
Thank God we have Thai literary masters like Edmond to guide us lesser mortals.

    How is it pronounced, then?

My 1st guess is "swey", then "soo-wey". The "wey" being similar to the 2nd syllable in Huawei.

If I'm correct, what's my prize?

    P.S.
I liked how the recorded announcer pronounced the names of stations in the MRT/ BTS. I can remember "Sala Daeng" with Daeng in a downward tone. Also "Nana".

It sounds more like "sir" but with a bit of an oo after the s.

    Get Lulu to call you.

^^ooh, so I was wrong on both counts. I patterned it after the Vietnamese pronunciation of the town "Hue" in central Vietnam. It's pronounced as Hwey (like in Huawei).

    @lulu - I have WhatsApp & Viber. My number is +63 987 654 3210.

    Edit:
Re: the OP, I liked the o/n train from Hua Lamphong to Chiang Mai. The 2-hour train ride to Ayutthaya was pleasant too.

Edit: that's not my real number, btw. If you look closely, it's 12345... in reverse. Only the country code is real. To the one who expressed his concern, thank you.
