    Chinese New Year 2023

Haven't exactly gone overboard with decorations at Government House

Bright red lanterns have been hoisted up at all entrances of Government House to mark the Year of the Rabbit. As of Tuesday, visitors and reporters on the Parliament beat caught sight of the lanterns at the gates.
Thailand has a large Chinese community and they believe the Deng Lun (red lanterns) welcome blessings from sacred beings.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2023 The ancient and spectacular Pak Nam Pho Chinese New Year festival kicked off in Nakhon Sawan on Monday night under the theme "The dragon flies skywards and the flowers bloom". The province 250km north of Bangkok is home to a large Chinese-Thai population who celebrate the lunar New Year on the Chao Phraya riverbank with fireworks, dragon and lion dancing and pole-climbing.
The festivities culminate on the night of January 24 with the Chao Pho-Chao Mae Pak Nam Pho procession, which is expected to draw over 100,000 visitors. A daytime procession of dancing dragons, lions and other traditional Chinese-Thai performances will flow through the streets on January 25, bringing the festival to an end.

The horror . . . years back I had a trip Suvarnabhumi to Penang without considering it was CNY, though once I got through the drummers and crowd, and had checked in to the hotel, Penang was a good place to be for CNY celebrations

Lunar New Year holiday surge may surpass 1.8 million passengers at Bangkok airport in just 12 days, say officials
    Monday, 16 Jan 2023

BANGKOK, Jan 16 (The Nation Thailand/ANN): As many as 1.81 million passengers are expected to pass through Suvarnabhumi international Airport during the Chinese New Year festival from January 16 to 28, the airport's general manager, Kittipong Kittikachorn, said on Sunday.

The airport will see 10,965 flights during the festival: 7,635 international and 3,330 domestic flights, he said. Ten airlines have asked for 86 extra and charter flights: 84 international and two domestic, Kittipong said. CNY in Chanthaburi
Fireworks began at dawn - but one step ahead, the household was already awake.
Neighbour directly across invited us over for his fireworks; the first string blasted away for about 90 seconds. Cleared the eardrums, and the birds, and suspect our squirrels have gone into hiding. And he said 'I have many more' - we can look forward to this for a week.
And then he presented me with a cooked chicken plus a watermelon.
Since then, the food arrivals include another cooked chicken, a container of large red sea crabs, another watermelon; a 5kg box of oranges, pineapples, apples, bananas, various sweets in banana leaves, boxed cakes, more cakes. Ms P at a work function and will bring back the usual food parcel they give out to staff. Overkill.
We'd intended to go our for dinner this evening, that can wait till another day.
Walked across town - deserted, at least half the shops closed and just a few cars.
My only red t-shirt a Jethro Tull Australia 2017 tour shirt, best i can do.

Rabbits on the bridge over the Chanthaburi River at Chantaboon yesterday

And somewhat laughably they still persist with the nonsense that Thailand has never been colonised.

. . . when they clearly have been socially, culturally and militarily.
