Pattaya: 70yr expat shot in the back, killed

70-year-old British Ex-pat Shot Dead in Pattaya
By Tanakorn Panyadee -Friday, 6 January 2023

A retired British engineer was shot to death in Pattaya while traveling home last night, January 5th. The cause of the incident remains a mystery.

The gruesome shooting occurred while the victim, Mr. Neil Lewis Roger, was traveling home on his red Scoopy I motorbike in Soi Khao Makok 1 in the Huai Yai subdistrict of Banglamung district, Chonburi. The 70-year-old was shot four times and passed away instantly on the spot.

Roger’s body was discovered by Mr. Kittikhun Impeng, 29. He told The Pattaya News that he noticed the victim lying face down on the roadside at 10:30 PM. He contacted the authorities as soon as he realized that the victim was bleeding.

Sawang Boriboon rescuers and police arrived and examined Roger’s body. They found four gunshot wounds on his back as well as three 9mm gun shells nearby.

Police met the victim’s wife, Ms. Thitiphan Kamlas, at the incident scene. As she mourned her beloved’s death, the 38-year-old Thai said the victim was a British engineer who chose to retire in Pattaya. He just returned to Thailand from England on January 4th after visiting his ill older sister.

On the day of the shooting, the victim reportedly went to a party with friends in Pattaya and did not come back home. The wife said she grew worried and was heartbroken when the authorities called her about his loss. Ms. Thitiphan stated she did not know if the victim had any enemies.

Pol. Col. Surakit In-um, superintendent of the Huai Yai police station, speculated a wide range of motives such as adultery, personal dispute, or road rage. The wife is being interrogated, and investigators are reviewing CCTV recordings to track down the still unidentified shooter.

A case for TD-CSI - Starter suggestions from the police include: adultery (might this include the wife?) , personal dispute, or road rage

He'd only been back for a day, and had lived there 4 years.

Adding to the mystery, Thairath reports that before leaving for the ride home he'd bought two cans of baked beans, one loaf of bread and half a cooked chicken. Make what you will of that (dinner, perhaps, but no sausages).

I suppose one cannot rule out at this stage it may have been a case of mistaken identity but on balance I would speculate it was the wife or a member of her close family unprepared to play the long game any longer.

    Let's look at the evidence.

Arrived back from holiday in UK on the 4th

Want's to go for a shandy on the 5th, but missus doesn't want to go, even though it is his first full day back.

Couldn't have been much of a party if he is near home a bit after 10pm and that includes stopping for his beans and bread.

Wife was worried, even though it was not that late.

    Mmmmm.
    Black diamonds? I shit 'em.

Its a lab coat with side slits instead of pockets. You are seeing through to the clothes worn under the lab coat.

Sounds like one hit to knock him off his motorcycle (that shell is missing) then 3 shots to the back once he was down, 3 shells nearby. The killer was serious about it. Not professional enough to clean up his brass though.

Mistaken identity couldn't be ruled out but the victim's motorcycle was sufficiently distinctive. The killer must have known either where the victim was at the start of his journey or for sure his route home. Since the route home wasn't 100% certain and the time of the victim's journey was flexible the killer most likely followed him from the party. Only a limited number of people knew he would be at the party. His wife presumably knew the venue and, already pointed out here, chose not to join her beloved on his first night out after returning to Thailand.

Lots of valuable info here. Firstly we have to consider it is Pattaya. If we do a fishbone diagram with that as the the problem it's clear we will have as many bones as a carp.

Good news though, we can eliminate balcony height.

    RIP old Fella.

TBH, when in the sticks, we are very rarely outside the village after dark. When I see my farang friends, it is lunch time and wife takes me and picks me up. If it's an evening do, then we stay the night. It's been like that since I've been here.

Obviously, different when in the cities, staying in hotel.

I think you will find after a potted study of mariticide cases in Thailand where the farang husband has been despatched by his wife ( and her lover/ family ) the greater proportion have occurred in the boonies. At one time Buri Ram was a hot spot but in truth it can happen anywhere but usually it is in the sticks.

More curious to wonder why is such an item newsworthy?
    Random Farang stranger.

    Sorry...I don't get it.

Funnily enough, a foreigner dying here in Thailand always makes news. Never understood why quite frankly but the majority always seem to be in Pattaya. Statistically it makes sense due to the foreigner visitors and the elements there.

We should start a poll to see how long it will take the police to rule it a suicide.

Hard to see beyond "Love triangle" or "business dispute".

Is there CCTV though? It looks a bit like a country lane.

If they were legally married then yes.
Providing she knew how to go about it which I suspect she doesn't unless she has guidance from another expat
She may also be entitled to UK properties, assets etc..

Getting a visa will prove problematic for the widow unless she has a British passport.

I fear all she will get are whatever he has in Thailand, which still will be a significant sum to her.

As for what's in the UK, that will probably go to any family in the UK or the state if he has none.

Anyhow, imho the wife hired a hitman.

Somchai the tuk tuk driver for 10,000baht to do the deed.

    RIP
    Shalom

    Short story.

A wealthy overweight man from Colwyn Bay in North Wsles married a Thai woman and died soon after from a heart attack.
He was overweight and the climate didn't agree with him.
The widow was left penniless and his assets went to the British government because they couldn't or wouldn't find any next of kin.
