Bomb causes freight train to derail in Songkhla province

Songkhla authorities have tightened up safety measures after a bomb planted on the railway caused a freight train derailment in the Sadao district on Saturday, December 3rd. No injuries were reported.

The cargo train No.707 operating between Hat Yai and Padang Besar derailed while it was approaching the Khlong Ngae railway station shortly after noon, following what Thai media reported as a loud bang similar to a bomb blast coming from the track.

Today, December 4th, the State Railway of Thailand officials who came to inspect the railway confirmed that the derailment was caused by a bomb blast, which left a two-meter-deep hole beneath the track. The bomb was homemade.

The officials said eleven of the 20 cars were derailed and badly damaged, but fortunately, no one inside the cars was injured.

The operation to salvage the train and repair the track would begin on Monday, December 5th, while bomb disposal specialists and security officers were clearing the area today.

Thai media reported that citizens were still coming to board the train at the Yala train station as usual, though the station was heavily guarded by security officers.

The deep south of Thailand has long had issues with insurgency operations who have continually conducted illegal operations meant to reduce confidence in the Thai government and frighten the public, said Songkhla officials to the media.

Work under way to restore sabotaged rail tracks in Songkhla Province

Manpower and heavy equipment have been sent to the scene of Saturday’s bomb blast in Sadao district of Songkhla, to remove several derailed train carriages and repair damaged sections of track.

Officials of the State Railway of Thailand said today (Monday) that a shipment of smoked rubber, which was on its way by train to Malaysia on the Hat Yai-Padang Besar line, is still scattered along the railway line in Khlong Ngae sub-district following the explosion.

Troops have been posted at the scene to protect workers as they complete the repairs and remove the derailed cars.

Meanwhile, police have been checking CCTV from the scene of the explosion and nearby areas in an effort to pick up any clues as to who might be have been involved in the sabotage, which is believed by security officials to have been an attempt to undermine the local economy.

Several people who were near the scene on the day of the explosion have been invited for questioning, but none of them have been found to be involved in the incident.

Two men sought over recent bomb attack on freight train in Songkhla

Warrants have been issued by the Na Thavee Provincial Court in Songkhla Province for the arrest of two men suspected of involvement in the bombing of the Hat Yai-Padang Besar freight train on December 6th, an attack in which three railway employees were killed and four others wounded.

The two suspects were identified by police as Atman Porlor, 27, a resident of Lamphlai sub-district in Thepha district, and 33-year-old Chirasak Penglor, a resident of Ban Na sub-district, Chana district.

Nine charges have been filed against them, which include murder and attempted murder, criminal association, terrorism, causing damage to a railway in a way which endangers train services and people and the possession and use of an explosive device.

Police claim that they have enough evidence to charge the two men, Atman in particular, who was claimed by witnesses to have been spotted inspecting the railway in Ban Tha Pho in Sadao district.

Security officials claim that the bombing was intended to undermine the economy of Thailand’s Deep South.

Railway officials in Hat Yai said they expect to complete repair of the damaged rail track and removal of all the remaining freight cars from the scene by December 25th.

About six freight cars are still at the scene and one is on the damaged track.

One day I promise, Thailand is going to see a Bali like bombing. At this stage of the dick holding staring competition that is this insurgency, it is almost most a when and not if.
