25 tonnes of meat soaked in formalin seized from Chonburi illegal meat processing pla

Thai Livestock Development Department officials confiscated 25 tonnes of pig and cow offal and other meat soaked in formalin from an illegal meat processing plant in the Sri Racha district yesterday, December 3rd.

The meat, potentially worth about five million baht, was discovered inside refrigerated containers and cooler tanks, according to Somchuan Ratanamungklanon, the department’s director-general. The seized products were intended for more than 60 bar-b-que shops around Chonburi.

Somchuan added he decided to raid the plant after nearby residents had complained to him about a foul smell emanating from the facility while some were concerned that the place might spread disease to the community.

Officials also found 2,300 receipts, which showed the names of customers and quantities of the meat products delivered to them. The director-general said samples of the meat products would be analyzed at the lab to determine if they contained any dangerous substances or diseases. The rest of the products would be seized.

Somchuan told the plant’s owner to produce the operating license to livestock officials within 15 days otherwise the confiscated meat would be buried or burned.

He forgot to add sold on after a fortnight marinade?

I guess if the neighbours could smell it you will need some really sitnky Tofu and Durian to "mask" the "fragrance".

Another illuminating vignette revealing the extent of the Thai willingness to scour the gutter of immorality in order to satisfy their rampant avarice.

I stopped eating street food years ago and in those ‘authentic’ market-side stalls when I saw for myself the disgusting squalor of their urban markets replete with running rats, cockroaches and flies settling on their ragged lumps of meat, slimy chicken and piles of pork fat amid offal baking in the stultifying heat. The stink of diluted blood congealing in scarcely open drains merely added to that smorgasbord of horror.

The bottom line is, Thai will always circumvent rules enforcing public hygiene and food standards if they can get away with it and in this land of lax enforcement, endemic corruption, ignorance and incompetence that is pretty much an omnipresent risk. That the innocent and unwary could be duped into consuming their poisonous goods is a matter of supreme indifference to the Thai, they simply don’t give a flying fuck as long as they can make a profit.

The problem of course in dealing with the inherent deceit of the Thai is that in the end no one can really ever know just how safe their food might be given the extent of reckless irresponsibility that permeates this rotten society. The use of banned pesticides and known carcinogenic fertilisers can never be ruled out - how many times have vegetable products been tested in the West for this type of contamination leading to a ban on imports from Thailand, and in imposing this how many times did the Thai government seek to conceal the true facts? I recall it took a university sponsored analysis to expose the scandal that so-called high priced organic products bearing the imprimatur of quality were also contaminated.

The rule is, as with everything in this country, caveat emptor.

Your problem, of course, is now you don't know which Grab eatery you can trust...

Indeed, their avarice and criminality permeates the entire food chain.

Limiting oneself to Eurocentric supermarkets and higher end outlets can mitigate risk but in the end the fuckers will always get you.

The other week whilst out for the morning exercise a couple of villagers called me to join them for breakfast. They were just on the point of plopping two plump rats into a pot. I made my excuses and they had the laugh they were hoping for.

There is a silver lining to this scandal.

The Russian filth that is now infesting Pattaya and Jomtien are of course mostly budget dross sharing condo rooms being illegally let as hotel accommodation. They have very little disposable income and are reliant on 7/11 for their alcohol needs but in satisfying their hunger they invariably graze off the street carts that cater for their taste - i.e kebabs. I shouldn’t think for one moment these street sellers are sourcing their product from either CP group or Makro but are more than likely to buy in from the slimeball distributor down in Sri Racha.

I know it’s of little consolation in the grand scheme of things but anything that might discomfort these cockroaches does offer some satisfaction.

A diet of rat and pussy plus 5 a day portions of home grown vegetables and you'll be as right as rain, fresh fileted field viagara fed rat of course, preferably well educated, British optional. Battered banana butty , just ask for a batty boy gobbet and you'll come away smiling. All washed down with a goblet of vintage Vimto, if your sommelier is uncertain the 2019 if any left.

With your literary gift perhaps you might pen a reverse Michelin guide a Seeking a Slum Guide: The Katoeys of Klontoey Kitchen nightmares?

I am unfamiliar with modern urban hell but apparently the largest wickdippers cess pit in thee world is a huge whorehouse near Chonburi and if that flails there is always the appeal of Banana Plaza, I realize a disease, rat and crime infested metropolis choked by corruption, pollution, gridlocked by katoey cabbies may not appeal to all but I'm sure I read about a person not sent IDC who is leaving the coast for a vacation there.

Like Bertie Basset it takes all sorts , if it is possible have a wonderful day, the sun is shining and despite the poisonous cuisine a few people may survive, bless those Russian neighbours the more who are here the fewer in Ukraine, perhaps you might like to savour a samovar and discover like minds, like Samaritans there are good people everywhere?

A dip in the sea like here can be really reinvigorating followed by a good rub down and like here if you avoid the turds a real pleasure.

Ahh, formalin! It's not just for seafood anymore.

Formalin: A 37% aqueous (water) solution of formaldehyde, a pungent gas, with the chemical formula HCHO, used as an antiseptic, disinfectant, and especially today as a fixative for histology (the study of tissues under the microscope).

No such thing. Central Group have a so-called loose partnership limited to importing certain lines from Waitrose for re-sale in their Tops outlets located within flagship developments viz. Central Chidlom in Bangkok and Central Festival here in Pattaya. These are limited in the main to dry goods and condiments and are generally within Waitrose’s economy branded lines but sold here as premium items. They did try to flog economy Waitrose charcuterie as a “luxury” line from Central Chidlom at not insignificant prices which failed to impress Bangkokians, natives and expats alike, and has long since disappeared.

Essentially, the stuff offered is simply not worth the markup and the quality is bogus. There is one exception, however, their large jar of Piccalilli which is the best of its type, both here and in Blighty.
