The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will consult the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Thai private sector about upgrading the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok next year, said Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.


Chadchart made a last-minute decision to join the 21km half marathon today (Sunday).


There were four categories today, the 42.195km marathon, the 21km half marathon as well as the 10km and 5km family fun runs.


The event, jointly organised by TAT, Tri-League and Toyota Thailand, was formally opened this morning by Minister of Tourism and Sports Pipat Ratchakitprakarn.


The run started at the Rajamangala National Stadium and passed several of Bangkok’s iconic landmarks, such as the Victory Monument, the Rama 8 bridge, the old parliament building, Benchamabophit Marble Temple, the Golden Mountain Temple and Ratchadamnoen Road. About 25,000 runners, including Governor Chadchart, took part.


The Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok is the biggest and most popular road run in Thailand and attracts tens of thousands runners each year.


The winner of the marathon today was Ethiopian Yimer Ari, who clocked 2:21:36 and was awarded a trophy from HM the King and a 100,000 baht cash prize. The first runner-up was Sanchai Namkhet, who clocked 224 and received 50,000 baht prize money. Third place went to Natthawut In-noom, who clocked 207 and received a 30,000 baht cash prize.


The female marathon winner was Kenyan Shelmith Muriuki, clocking 2:39:38, who received a trophy from HM the Queen and a 100,000 baht cash prize. Russian Alexandra Morozova came second with a time of 2:49:07 and the third prize went to another runner from Kenya, Magaret Njuguna.


Thai female marathon runner Linda Chanthachid came first among the Thai female participants, clocking 2:55:30. She received a trophy from HM the Queen and a 50,000 baht cash prize.


The winner of the half marathon was another Kenyan, Kepha Ongeri Ondima, who clocked 1:04:07. He received a trophy from HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati.


The female winner of the half marathon was Ethiopian Marta Birehan, who clocked 1:19:47 hours. She received a trophy from HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati and a 50,000 baht cash prize.
