One passenger killed, 9 injured when crane’s hook slams into minibus in Chonburi

A woman was killed and nine other passengers were injured when a dangling pendulum hook from a mobile crane struck a minibus and overturned it in the Ban Bueng district on Wednesday, November 30th.

The collision took place around 8:30 PM on the Chonburi- Ban Bueng Road in the Nong Samsark subdistrict, according to rescuers responding to the accident.

The minibus was found overturned near a parked crane truck at the entrance of Soi Pathomphorn. Rescuers discovered a crane’s hook on the road in the back of a bus.

One woman was lying in the wreckage of a minibus with multiple serious injuries. Despite an attempt to resuscitate her, the woman could not survive. Her name was revealed later as Ms. Pannipa Phuanghom, a 32-year-old Prachuap Khiri Khan native.

The minibus driver, identified only as Somboon, told police he was transporting 10 passengers from Bangkok to Trat province. At the accident scene, the crane had emerged suddenly from a side street, with its hook hanging far in front of it.

A monk who was one of Somboon’s passengers shouted a warning, but it was too late. The hook then crashed into the minibus’s roof. Other than the deceased victim, nine other passengers were injured, according to rescuers.

The crane driver, identified only as Thongchai, said he was heading out onto the main road, to return to the company compound in the Bang Saen district.

Chonburi legal officers were examining CCTV footage of the road to press legal action.

I have always wondered if the Thai coroner’s office, or its equivalent, should petition the government ministry responsible for such matters to include stupidity as a cause of death to be recorded on the death certificate e.g.

    1. Brain haemorrhage.
    1.a. Stupidity.
