Two Thai women die during a mountain trek journey in Nepal

Two Thai female mountain trekkers died on Friday in Nepal, according to foreign news agencies.

The two victims, 49-year-old Pataya Philaisengsuri and 37-year-old Penny Aranlum, were among a group of 22 people, including 12 trekkers, 8 porters and 2 guides, who set out on the Annapurna circuit trek, from Besi Sahar in Lamjung to Tilicho Lake, starting on November 11th.

The group reached the lake on November 17th but, on the way back, the two Thai women fell ill, due to extreme cold and high altitude, and were injured. They died at the foot of Mesokanto La Pass, which is about 4,919 metres above sea level.

A helicopter flew their bodies to the Nepali capital, Kathmandu, for autopsy.

I've been there, the altitude sickness is real. But, allowing two people to die is pretty useless.

It's not really clear if that was the cause.

Perhaps they actually fell while ill?

It could have happened quite quickly without the guide's knowledge.

It's gotta be asked.... just when did the penny drop.

You're right, the article is extraordinary light on details. The photo accompanying the article in the link above is a generic mountain climbing pic.

Altitude sickness doesn’t suddenly jump up at you, the women and guides should have had plenty of time to notice it. Also they were descending so they should have been improving if they were suffering from it. I had a case of it at Gorak Shep but quickly got better when I turned around to go back down.
I do wonder if they had proper cold weather gear, or “Thai cold weather” clothing from their last trip to a Thai mountain!

I was just looking for a way to fit 'when did the penny drop' into the post, to be honest.

It gets real cold and thin when you go over that pass. There is a small wooden hut there with some warm tea, it doesn't fucking help. I did it in December and it was almost unbearable. Must have been a bad cold snap the last 24hrs as November this time is usually ok. However, up there, shit can change real quick and real bad. Dozens of hikers were killed on the Ana of exposure not so long ago and that was in October!

Sorry, my mistake, I assumed they were at the Thorong La Pass. I now get where they were, that lake is stunning but a massive detour. I assume they took this way because it is a lower pass, Thorong La Pass is higher.

Anyway, one might ask why go at this time, well because there is hardly anyone hiking the circuits/ trails at this time of year. We literally went 2 days without coming across another tourist, it is pretty amazing being up there all on your own.

If any of you are thinking about going and have a good level of fitness, I would go for Manaslu circuit, a lot quieter than Annapurna.

Also two helpful simplistic maps below for yas, hike to the lake starts between 8/10 but I am somewhat confused as I never knew there was a pass, I always thought it was an in and out detour.

    Added another map for yas.

    RIP to all.

^ yep. I suspect they were not ready for the circuit, its quite challenging unless you are used to the terrain. The constant gains and drops and of course the altitude. Many rush to start the trek, fly in and leave no time to acclimatise both to altitude and if they flew in from Thailand the cold.

here's a map you can zoom in to on the circuit.

Helge is right in that getting the squitters will increase dehydration which at high altitude is much worse than that at sea level and no doubt will exacerbate deteriorating health. What I do not understand is how the guides failed to notice their poor condition which could have been alleviated to a considerable extent at that height by the simple measure of resting until they recover.
