Lived on 13 years ago and was not at all like it is now. No way I would live near there now

Mrs. T's wonderful family live on Suk 22 and it has been our BKK bolthole since 1989 when we are not in either Hua Hin or the UK.

Back then it was primarily a residential area, gated mansions and terraces of shophouses existed side by side with dozens of noodle and curry shops, wet markets and the usual businesses that serve a residential area; doctors, dentists, repair shops, barbers, beauty salons, ma and pa shops selling individual cigarettes, rubber bands, shots of liquor and home made herbal drinks out of those huge glass fronted fridges for 1b. The owners of all these family run and owned businesses lived above the shop and were invariably welcoming and cheerful.

But slowly came the condominiums, followed by the huge hotels, the noisy bar complexes, the happy ending massage joints, the supermarkets, the horrible 7/11 and family mart stores, the terrible traffic jams down the soi with the pollution they bring and hordes of burmese workers living 10 to a room as all semblance of a thriving community where residents knew one another disappeared.

The family businesses couldnt compete with the corporate invasion, sold up and with the massive profits they made on their properties or rents moved out to western style moo baans in the suburbs.

The demographic there now is mostly sweaty bobbleheads, phlegm spewing chinks, fat drunk euros all served by the gimlet eyed sour faced grasping out of town thais that have replaced the once cheerful happy go lucky locals.

Frankly, it’s a bore and the ever growing numbers of unappealing Chinese, Russians, Indians, Arabs and Asians make it more and more unattractive.

The urban stink, the squalor, the litter, the traffic congestion, the pollution, the tainted beaches, the absence of any culture other than the folkloric, the ubiquity of the Thai addiction to shopping mall culture, the absence of any heritage of note other than the repetition of their uniformly uninteresting temples, the unexciting cuisine dependent upon the tediously inevitable over-use of garlic, fish sauce, lime and chillis to mask the poor quality of produce bolstered by their slavish addiction to their rice and noodles, and the absurdly ludicrous belief that their country is the centre of the universe and all visitors to it must never be permitted to integrate make the place increasingly tenth rate.
Why do you still live there? It seems your a miserable kunt . There is an airport ya know

    Why

although i am prepared to believe the reality might be different, the image gleaned from blds posts on this forum picture him as being of similar appearance to bluto, the perpetually scowling, heavily tattooed, unshaven low iq bruiser that always came off second best in the popeye cartoons.

possibly still wearing the dated double denim uniform typical of the middle aged illiterate meathead class, his loud throaty belches reeking of stale beer, scotch eggs and cigarette smoke, tapping his doc martins to the unsophisticated rhythms of status quo and headbanging to the downer rock beats and phrygian chordal progressions of metallica and judas priest, the poor frazzled gormless old throwback lives in an alcoholic haze of confusion, bewilderment and puzzlement, completely unaware of having being overtaken, lapped and left for dead as life passes him by and finds him hopelessly scrabbling for purpose, meaning and reason in a cloud of dust.

he just doesnt get it at all.

What in your opinion set them apart? I agree re your assessment of a shift toward western consumerism. However, I disagree this is the case for the entire nation. Get out of the urban areas and you would be hard pressed to find any sign of extreme consumerism. Everyday I see many things, to my mind, that set them apart.

The entire society that once lived within their stratified communities in a mutual balance has now morphed into a world where narrow self interest is the primary vector of their interaction as they come to terms with debt.
Thailand is heading for a crash - their debt exposure is simply not compatible with an economy based on a monthly wage rate of 12000 -15000 baht - and the old order is no longer there to sustain the medieval straitjacket of supine compliance.
Thailand has the distinction of being the world’s worst country where its total wealth is controlled by the least number of people.
But in the end it doesn’t matter, China will control everything in the region so who gives a fuck.

You say that but even while navigating the many sleepy backroads of the Myanmar border region last week I was struck by the number of adverts nailed to trees advertising HP deals on Rangers, white goods, etc...

I fear sir your bold, neigh, couth assertion is utter testicles. I am sure you are neither bereft of research nor don't intend to mislead perhaps you skipped school, like so many here, or the drinks were too many and too various? Have a rub on the Geni?

Firstly I too lived on sois 11/13 and 22 many years go and fond memories of Cheap Charlies the NZ fish place and Tapas all long gone.

Of course I also recall power cuts piss poor internet, endless pollution, floods and general third world conditions for many literally on wrong side of the tracks or the slums of Klong Toey.

The past is a different country and nostalgia always recalls those good times with old pals in long gone haunts it was ever thus.

I foundly recall after a double shift in the jam butty mines of N Staffordshire earning enough for an avocado dip double fish supper, washed down with Kumquat Kombucha then off to Chitty's Night Club and Cyberian message parlour at Khvnt Green Turnings Mow Cop for 12 pints of Marston's Pedigree flat white a gleaming new Penny farthing and a BJ from a Mammoth, with change from a three bob note and you tell young people today and they won't believe you.

As rightly assert there is wide income disparity but Thailand is no where near the extreme .

    Thailand's Inequality Levels | 2021 | Economic Data | World Economics

As you will see even a perfunctory perusal of the data Thailand is almost identical to Australia Serbia and Spain , and better than the UK.

Higher Geni coefficient represent more even.

The Czech and Slovak republics along with Slovenia are at the top of the distribution stakes.

I hope these revelations assist and won't deter your eloquence, on the contrary may help you "pull it off " so to speak in a more satisfactory manner.

The World Bank’s data for 2019 has Thailand having the highest income inequality rate in East Asia/Pacific region and the widely reported data singling Thailand out as having the world’s highest income inequality was the Credit Suisse report of December 2018.

Needless to say, the Thai rejected the report but then, they would, wouldn’t they.

BLD, stop babbling and stick to your own pursuits. Incidentally, I don’t despise the country, I despise its governance but then, that’s probably true of most of the world, you oaf.

World Economics is not a reliable source, particularly when one notes the data has been skewed by the worst fucking pandemic in modern history since 1918.

I live in what Thais refer to as Ban Nok. Sure a few have Shopee but even those that do simply don't have the money to purshase much of anything.

SA's quote above is spot on. The vast majority in the village don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out.

No thanks, I did it last week and I'm still recovering from the lao khao which I suspect destroyed at least one lobe of my liver

Maybe it's different in Shan territory but none of them seem to have settled for a Nokia 3350.

It’s quite clear that SA misses the ‘supine compliance’ of the native population. The posture that allowed him to lord it over locals, using his highly refined colonial manners.
You have clearly been here too long, especially given that you settled in Pattaya, to enjoy the fruits of your colonial past.
The Thai do not enjoy your superiority complex SA. They copied it, enabling them to kick you into the gutter where you rightfully belong. Time has moved on and you should have moved on long ago, instead of extolling the virtues of your faded and precarious ‘upstairs downstairs’ memories.

The whole 'colonialism' schtick is worn out, especially in places like NZ where it is used as an excuse for all behaviour, demands and emotional blackmail with the ensuing 'Malay Dilemma' response, which has turned into the 'Second Malay Dilemma'. .

SA simply doesn't like the place, but it still offers a better life for him than the UK, like you prefer Bali for probably similar reasons.

It’s quite clear that the colonial past to which I referred belongs to SA. Despite past centuries, when western countries vied for influence in Siamese matters.

You really are a dribbling idiot.

The ‘supine compliance’ to which I referred, you dull-brained dolt, was in reference to the default position adopted by the Thai who invariably kowtow to their medieval masters making up their ruling classes as a consequence of which they remain under their jackboot of exploitation.

Fuck knows how you manage to construe some sort of imaginary, recherche colonialism on my part but then, who knows just what goes on inside that walnut-sized brain of yours as you slip ever deeper into your senility.

    You fucking stupid tit.
