Chiang Rai Doctor Sacked for Calling Patient Stupid

According to the hospital, a doctor at Chiang Saen Hospital in Chiang Rai who was filmed yelling at a patient and calling her stupid has been suspended indefinitely.

The action occurred after the Public Health Ministry voiced worry about the harsh working circumstances of medical staff.

The Chiang Saen Hospital in Chiang Rai announced in a statement on Sunday that the doctor in question had been suspended indefinitely rather than for five days as originally instructed.

In addition, the hospital has launched an internal investigation into the incident.

The doctor could be seen sitting cross-legged on a chair, playing with a mobile phone while engaging in a verbal altercation with the patient and the patient’s relatives in a TikTok video on social media over the weekend.

The doctor can be heard calling the patient “Stupid” at one point in the TikTok video.

The patient, a 36-year-old pregnant lady, arrived at the hospital seeking treatment for nausea and vomiting, for which the physician gave an injection.

However, the patient refused the treatment because she was concerned that it would worsen her cardiac condition.

The altercation with the doctor erupted quickly.

Chiang Saen Hospital director Sookchai Theansavettrakul expressed remorse for the event, explaining that it was caused by a misunderstanding between the doctor and a patient and her relatives.

Following the hospital’s decision, the Public Health Ministry recognized the need to increase the doctor-patient ratio at hospitals across the country to relieve stress and pressure on the medical staff, particularly at state-run hospitals and other medical facilities.

The ministry’s deputy permanent secretary, Taweesilp Visanuyothin, said the ministry would increase manpower in areas affected by medical staff shortages during the next five years to alleviate the problem.

Staff surveys will begin soon, focusing on the North and Northeast due to their huge populations.

Staff in regions where there are no shortages may be reassigned to other areas to assist balance the load, he said.

According to Yongyud Wongpiromsarn, an adviser to the Mental Health Department, medical staff are concerned about their stressful working conditions.

He believes safeguards should be implemented to avoid conflict between doctors and patients.

“No one can say who is correct or incorrect in this case,” he added, adding that hospitals should have a dedicated mental health facility for personnel.

I was hoping he meant no one could say who was correct about the medical treatment the patient refused.

One would think a qualified doctor would be higher up the list . . . if said doctor would have given a stuff about the patient.

Could be the doctor was worn to the bone, who knows.

So the patient arrives for help and the doctor suggests one treatment which she rejects. What she arrived with probably had zero to do with her cardiac condition, the doctor looses it and calls here stupid.

As always, there is far more to this tale than meets the eye.

Anyway that's my opinion but it's definitely not a hill I intend to battle on.

Read that Russell its not even clear what happened yet here you are saying the punishment was too lenient. Even my wife agreed the punishment was fair just for the way she acted and spoke to the patient. The word stupid here is a big deal. But there is no way you would know that.

The opposite - he's saying the punishment was too harsh.

    It was highly unprofessional AO.

The doctor has a family to support too.

If that happened in Canada the doctor would get some action from the college. Maybe an official complaint.

This is all a 'mountain' over a molehill stuff. Pedestrian grist.

That's not very nice my friend. Of course I would.

Her family has nothing to do with what happened.

Why do you bring college into it? It happened in a government hospital.

It did not happen in Canada it happened in Thailand so that comment is moot.

I'm not sure that was covered in the article . . . but backgrounds of med students in Canada and med students in Thailand can't be compared.

YUp - absolute grounds for dismissal. A doctor cannot simply 'lose it' and call people stupid . . . you should watch the video to see that she is not 'losing it', rather is just being an arrogant kwai

Chiang Saen Hospital has nothing to do with a medical college. Russell let it go you know nothing about Thailand. Not even the south where you lived. Stick to your own medical issues.

The Thai cannot help themselves. They are rigid in their social stratification in which the universal driving force behind their interaction is the obsession with status and their place within society. And once that is established there is the hierarchy of social grouping to which many belong that confers an imagined value to their lives not shared with others viz army, police, corporate entity, hospital, bank, civil service department, right down to a franchise in a shopping mall. Their obligation and loyalty to their group is intrinsic to their being and any judgement, initiative and common sense is utterly subordinated to groupthink - they are truly institutionalised and it begins with school and onward to university.

And the worst fuckers in my experience are doctors and their nazi nurses.

Mengele and Nurse Ratched were obviously role models during their training.

Do you really not know what 'the College' is when we are referring to doctors. The medical college refers to a professional board overseeing the behaviour of medical doctors. Maybe give the pipe a break buddy.

ao is probably making the mistake of believing something you've posted.

You've mentioned several chronic health issues over the years that necessitate treatment with prescribed drugs.

You do realize you are not in Thailand and know nothing about it. We have no medical college that oversees anything Russell. Fuck me you remain thick as a brick. Let go of the marijuana references, they are as old tired and worn out as you.
