    Cabinet Greenlights U-Tapao Expansion

    BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has approved in principle a plan to massively expand U-Tapao Airport in Rayong province to develop its capacity for accommodating commercial flights by adding a new runway, taxiways and facilities.


    According to Government Spokesperson Ratchada Dhnadirek, the expansion will serve business operations based in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).


    The aim is to serve up to 60 million yearly passengers and transform the airport closest to the popular tourist city of Pattaya into a major international travel hub. Most passengers are currently being served by Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, along with Phuket International Airport.


    The U-Tapao expansion was originally launched in October 2019 by the Royal Thai Navy on a budget of 17.77 billion baht. The Ministry of Finance has been tasked with seeking the remaining 16.31 billion baht to fund the project.

    Indeed, quite normal for the armed forces of a sovereign state to take upon itself the development of a public civil aviation transport project integral to a national strategic plan involving billions of baht of tax revenues.

    Yep, nothing wrong with that at all.

    London’s Heathrow Terminal 5 was of course developed by the Royal Navy, a little known fact.

    U-Tapao was developed by the US as a base operating B52 bombers destroying Vietnam on land under the then control of the Royal Thai Navy whose main base is focused on Sattahip.

    So, quite fucking normal then that the land and airport is ‘owned’ by the Thai navy fifty seven years later and developed by them as a separate entity from the Thai government, the Thai taxpayers and the Ministry of Transport, and the local MP.

    just imagine if a regional uk airport announced a similar expansion plan.

    there would be 50 years of committees, reviews, noise abatement and hedgehog protection protocols tightened up, millions of pounds spent on useless environmental surveys and every fucking climate change activist in the land would chain themselves to the fence before the plan was eventually shelved to the delight of the insufferable locals and the local industries moved their production to china and the tourist businesses continued to struggle.

    Your posting manifests such delusional thinking these days one really does worry about your state of mind. Are you drinking or are you battling some illness or other.

    The UK has no less than 47 or so regional airports, but of those the largest regional ports number about 15 which service international routes in addition to domestic destinations which in 2018 accounted for a total traffic of over 115 million passengers.

    This traffic flow represents a doubling of capacity since 1997 and in many cases much, much more.

    For example, in 2000/2001 Bristol saw a burst in use and expansion following the arrival of Go/Easyjet and others which increased traffic from a modest charter business scarcely exceeding a million passengers annually to over 8 millions in 2018.

    This exponential growth has all been achieved without corruption and opaque practices one might associate with military dictatorships as exemplified by Thailand.

    You really are bit of a ninny Tax.

    to be perfectly honest, a bit of military dictatorship is exactly what is needed in the uk right now.

    the mad liberal left, their activists and lawyers exploit every ambiguity and loophole of our laws to delay and stymie any plans that any sensible person can see would benefit the country and its people.

    Plans for a new terminal building at Leeds Bradford Airport has been scrapped following "excessive" delays, years of controversy, and calls for a public enquiry.

    Airport bosses said they are not prepared to commit more money over an "indefinite timeframe".

    Instead, they will now revert to original plans to extend to the existing terminal to meet increasing passenger demand as the aviation sector recovers from the pandemic.

    Planning permission for the £150m upgrade was originally granted by Leeds City Council last year, despite strong opposition from environmental campaigners.

    Protesters against the plans included climate scientists, transport experts, residents’ groups, and medical professionals. They warned it would facilitate catastrophic climate change, as well as cause unbearable and harmful levels of noise pollution for those living close by.

    Campaigners and climate academics were strongly against the expansion, calling for flights in and out of Leeds to be dramatically reduced.



    The plan was to demolish the existing passenger pier to make way for a new terminal building and forecourt area.

    However, in January, the government overruled that decision and called for a public inquiry. At the time, it was criticised by airport bosses, who said it would be "highly sustainable and boost the local economy."


    Alex Sobel, labour MP for Leeds North West, welcomed the decision. He said he hopes the airport enter discussions about reducing aviation emissions.

    Last year, he said in an open letter that the plans must be stopped for the good of future generations.


    Today Leeds Bradford Airport said it is still committed to creating a modern, decarbonised regional UK airport.

    Vincent Hodder, CEO of Leeds Bradford Airport, said: "Whilst this is a setback for our airport and region, we remain committed to investing in LBA to be an outstanding, decarbonised, modern airport for the future."

    "My team and I are optimistic about the recovery from the pandemic and about the future of Leeds Bradford Airport."

    The Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport (GALBA) said that the news was a "victory for our climate and communities".

    Chris Foren, chair of the group. said: "We are delighted that LBA has acknowledged defeat. It means that LBA cannot extend daytime flying hours nor remove nighttime flying controls.

    "As they said in their own planning application, this means they don't have the capacity to increase passenger numbers above 5 million a year."

    A Department for Levelling Up spokesperson said: “Leeds Bradford Airport have notified the Planning Inspectorate that they have withdrawn their planning application to extend the airport. We have noted this decision.

    “We are committed to firing up Yorkshire’s economic engine and are taking decisive action to spread opportunity and investment away from the South East and our £4.8bn Levelling Up Fund is investing in infrastructure and upgrading transport across the UK.”

    thanks to the tree huggers, the loony left and the disciples of greta, the much needed expansion of this yorkshire airport has been cancelled. it would have brought business and visitors into the area and made it easier for travellers, reducing their need to use the unreliable railways or the jammed up roads to cross the pennines to the godforsaken facilities offered by the airport at manchester.

    Tax, 47 miles separates Leeds Bradford Airport from Manchester airport which is currently undergoing expansion due to be completed in 2024. Potentially, it has a capacity of 50 million passengers annually but so far has seen a limit of 27 million annually which will be increased in due course.

    The Tyke plans for LBA were in truth redundant and quite rightly local democracy stymied local greed.

    Manchester Airport is a fucking disgrace. With its lack of maintenance, its surly fat scruffy officials, its dirt, its stinking toilets, its draconian parking regulations and charges, it is a dystopian nightmare for both arrivals and departures. The trans pennine train services, even before the marxist unions called their overpaid " workers" was prone to unannounced cancellations and delays, just the thing when you have a plane to catch, and the M62 motorway, from West Yorks to Manchester is a nightmare. The tiniest little fender bender and the police will shut the road down for hours, health and safety they call it.

    Leeds Bradford airport is a small facility serving W. Yorkshire and an upgrade will be of immense benefit to the region, its people, and its businesses.

    The Thai protocols for infrastructure are excellent. Need it ? Then just fucking build it. Backhanders are an unfortunate by product, but omelette and eggs.

    Rank upon rank of committees and civil servants just get in the way of progress and fuck everything up with their delays and so called "concerns".

    Tax, my dear fellow, I rather think the increase in daily temperatures following on from the vernal equinox has foozled your synapses.

    There is not a project proposed here that has finished on time, to a competent standard and without nigh on 30% of the budget being leeched away in corruption.

    Manchester is run entirely in accordance with the demographic it serves, northern twats unused to the norms of civilised society so, Tax, there’s your answer.
