Israeli man arrested at Phuket Airport with 55 firearm bullets

An Israeli man has been arrested at the Phuket International Airport with 55 5.56 mm bullets.

The Sakoo Police told the Phuket Express that on Wednesday (October 26th) they have arrested a 29-year-old Israeli man at the Phuket International Airport. He was heading to Bangkok. His full name, however, was not released by Sakoo police to the press.

Officers found 55 bullets, 5.56 mm, in his luggage which are used for a rifle after the X-ray process. The Israeli man admitted that the bullets belonged to him, according to Sakoo police.

The suspect was taken to the Sakoo Police Station in Thalang. He is facing charges of illegal possession of ammunition.

Police found that the suspect last visited Thailand in 2018. Last time, he arrived at Samui Island from Tel Aviv in Israel.

A statement from the suspect on why he had the bullets was not immediately made to the Thai press.

Well unless he was merely transiting in Phuket, the old blue suede shoe "I forgot they were in my suitcase but everyone has them at home" story might not suffice.

A Thai court on Friday handed down an 18-month jail sentence to a former Israeli Border Police officer who was arrested in October at the Phuket airport with two bullet magazines in his suitcase, Hebrew media reported.
Gal Shmuel Farjun, 29, claimed that he left the bullets in his bag by accident when he traveled from Israel to Thailand, and the Foreign Ministry had hoped that the court would agree to deport, rather than jail him, given the circumstance.
Farjun, who has no criminal background, had been held under house arrest since shortly after he was apprehended at the airport on October 22.

His lawyer plans to file an appeal against the decision in the coming weeks. He was again released to house arrest upon posting bail. It was unclear when his sentence would begin.
One of Farjun’s relatives told the Yisrael Hayom daily that his family has been in shock since the sentence was handed down. “Everyone is shocked. Gal is a good soul. The best soul walking in this world. We’re trying to be strong for him and not think about the possibility of him sitting in prison, but it’s hard.”

well with 55 rounds, perhaps he needed to nobble 5 football teams for a gambling scam or ensure the Iranian promise recently reported not to slay Israelis for a while.

If he is the best just imagine the rest.

How did he then bypass Irraeli bag checks/x-ray; I'd have expected them to be more thorough?

This wasn’t a bag of drugs. It was an innocent mistake. He finished his reserve duty, put the bag in storage and forgot that the bullet magazines were in there,” the relative added.
The Foreign Ministry has in the past urged citizens going abroad, many of whom are freshly released from military service, to double-check their luggage to make sure there are no stray bullets.
A similar incident took place in 2019, leading to the brief detention of a pair of Israelis in Egypt and the arrest of another Israeli in Azerbaijan a year earlier.

They drill fire arm safety into you from Day 1. No way do you forget two boxes of bullets in a bag.

    Absolutely

This is not some USA gun club nor Pristina, Benghazi, Madchester 1980s
I don't know about the IDS but pretty sure every single round or clip needs be signed out accounted for, it is standard practice for obvious reasons in professional forces.
