If you can see, some powerlines were caught by some tree branches and it has pulled all the wires to be about 1 or so meters above the water. This should get interesting

I like blue cheese stuffed olives but I will have to do the stuffing myself. I did look at Villa’s offerings after Stumpy said he got his olives there. They have jalapeño stuffed olives. Oooh. I like those too.

Historian claims collapsed Chang Phuak Gate and wall in Chiang Mai were rebuilt 80 years ago

A retired fine arts lecturer at Chiang Mai University has claimed that the ancient Chiang Mai city wall and Chang Phuak Gate, which partially collapsed due to heavy rain last weekend, are not the original wall and gate built over seven centuries ago, but were rebuilt only about 80 years ago.


Emeritus Professor Surapol Damrikul said in his Facebook post today (Monday) that it was fortunate that the wall partially collapsed, so people in Chiang Mai would know that this wall and gate were rebuilt and were an eyesore on a historical site.


He claimed that the entire ancient city wall and gates were destroyed and all the old bricks sold long ago and that they were eventually rebuilt some 80 years ago by then Chiang Mai mayor Tim Chotna without any historical basis.


He claimed that there are only two old pictures showing the Tha Pae and Chang Phuak gates in the National Archives, adding however that, of all the rebuilt gates, only the Tha Pae Gate was rebuilt on the orders of former Chiang Mia governor Chaiya Poonsiriwong, in line with the original design and with permission from the Fine Arts Department.


He asked the people of Chiang Mai to understand that the collapsed recently Chang Phuak Gate was not an ancient gate and prayed for that heavy rain, induced by tropical storm Noru in the next few days, will bring down the three remaining rebuilt gates as well.


Another Facebook page claimed that the Chang Phuak Gate, which is shown in the old picture kept at the National Archives, is in fact the Hua Wiang Gate.

Bright and sunny in Isan too. Just time to do the laundry before the next downpour.
TBH I'm not expecting the rain from Noru to be as heavy as what we have already had in the last couple of days. Vietnam will get a lot though.

Yes I do and it conveniently holds a 6 pack of Beer Lao in a nice cooler with ice. I keep my Wave stock to sustain a low profile while motoring around with a beer in hand. It also holds my 2 liter gas can for fill ups and my basketball when I go shoot hoops at the park.

Today has been patchy clouds with some sun to help dry things out a bit. The Wang river rose about 1/2 meter over night. Sure hope it drops a bit before the new storm comes.

Three flights bound for Ubon Ratchathani turned back to BKK due to poor weather

Three domestic flights from Bangkok to the north-eastern province of Ubon Ratchathani this morning (Wednesday) were forced to turn back, after the pilots were unable to land due to poor weather conditions caused by approaching tropical storm Noru.


Thai VietJet Air flight VZ226 left Suvarnabhumi at 7.45am today for Ubon Ratchathani, but the pilot was forced to return to Bangkok. The same plane made a second attempt at about 11am but still could not land.


Nok Air flight DD322 left Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport at 9.30am, also for Ubon Ratchathani. The pilot made three attempts to land, but he gave up and returned to Don Mueang.


Nine flights by five airlines are scheduled to leave for Ubon Ratchathani from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports throughout today (Wednesday), but it is not known whether any of them will be able to land at their intended destination.


None of the airlines had announced the postponement or cancellation of their flights at the time of this report and there is still no word from the Ubon Ratchathani airport about how it will deal with the situation.

Skies are darkening up and winds picking up. The Google Map real time satellite images shows the spinning wind has pushed a bunch southwards to Central Thailand. The Northeast must be getting hammered about now. Won't hit Northern Thailand until later this evening.

It is earily quiet here. There has been a bit of light rain on and off during the day, nothing at all now and nearly windless. Maybe it has gone further south than expected?

Ubon, Si Saket, Trat, and Chantaburi now is what they are saying. BKK will get hit but not too worried at this time. Gray out but not to thick yet. One of the few times here you can see the storm coming in. Clear first, high thin clouds and now thickening.

On the bright side, even the chinkies won't be able to stop Tonle Sap filling up this year.

Hopefully it's bypassed us - coastal Chanthaburi; an unseasonal (regardless of typhoon) dry day yesterday, 10-15min light rain about 7.30am now patchy skies with an attempt at sunshine. The inland hills/mountains north and east towards the border tend to get far more rainfall then we do. So far, so good.

I think if you hadn't read any reports about this you would just consider it typical of the Chiang Mai weather this year. Looks like maybe some heavy rain tomorrow morning for a while, but nothing really dangerous. It's blown itself out to a tropical depression.

I guess that Noru has passed. It's hard to tell. It was raining before Noru and it's raining again today.

Not a lot going on here. Cloudy and a nice breeze.
