Miss Grand Myanmar 2020 denied entry to Thailand

After arriving from Vietnam today (Tuesday), Han Lay, Miss Grand Myanmar 2020, was denied entry to Thailand at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok by immigration officials for not having a passport.

Pol Maj-Gen Archayon Kraithong, spokesman for the Immigration Bureau, said that Han Lay is not in the possession of a passport or any official document equivalent to a passport and, therefore, is not allowed to enter Thailand.

He added, however, that Han Lay was not arrested, but will have to be deported immediately. The latest report suggests that she had been placed under the care of Interpol.

It was subsequently revealed that the junta in Myanmar had revoked her passport, believed to be retaliation for a speech she made about the situation in Myanmar during the Miss Grand International pageant held in Bangkok in March last year.

At the time, the Miss Grand International organization arranged for Han Lay to stay in Thailand for three months at its expense, to ensure her safety, instead of returning to Myanmar.

    Thailand bars anti-junta Myanmar model

A Myanmar model and beauty pageant contestant who took refuge in Thailand after speaking out against the military coup in her homeland has been denied entry after a trip abroad and detained at Suvarnabhumi airport, immigration authorities said on Thursday.

Han Lay, Miss Grand International Myanmar 2020, was returning to Thailand from Da Nang in Vietnam and arrived at the airport on Wednesday afternoon, said Pol Maj Gen Archayon Kraithong, deputy chief of the Immigration Bureau.

She was not arrested as reported earlier by some media, he said.

However, an immigration officer spotted an irregularity on Han Lay’s passport, so she was denied entry under Section 12 of the Immigration Act 1979, Pol Maj Gen Archayon said.

Her manager had said that Han Lay, also known Thaw Nandar Aung, was the subject of an Interpol notice but this could not be confirmed.

A source said Han Lay’s passport might have been revoked by Myanmar's military junta, hence the irregularity and her inability to gain entry to Thailand.

She will be sent back to the country where her flight originated or she can fly to an alternative destination subject to approval by the airline she flew with, Pol Maj Gen Archayon said.

According to a Facebook account called “Natty in Myanmar”, Han Lay had already sought asylum with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Thailand.

Han Lay, 23 captured international attention last year with a moving speech at the Miss Grand International pageant in Bangkok, where she called for urgent help for Myanmar’s people.

An arrest warrant was reportedly issued against her by the Myanmar military afterward. At the time she said she was in contact with her family and that they were safe. She had been living in Thailand ever since.

Nawat Itsaragrisil, the founder of the Miss Grand International pageant, who also represents Han Lay, said she had been in the transit area of the airport since Wednesday afternoon. He said Han Lay was she had been in the transit area of the airport since Wednesday afternoon.

He said Han Lay was stopped on arrival from Vietnam because she was the subject of an Interpol notice. “She doesn’t want to anywhere else. She wants to live in Thailand,” he told Reuters. “She’s waiting for a solution on how she can stay in Thailand.”

Myanmar has been crisis since a coup in February last year triggered protests that the military suppressed with lethal force and thousands of arrests.

The junta’s crackdown had multiple targets, from pro-democracy and youth groups, to activists, politicians and even celebrities and social media influencers.

A spokesperson for Myanmar’s ruling military council could not be reached for comment. Interpol did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether Han Lay was the subject of an Interpol notice. In an interview with Reuters last year,

Han Lay said her people “will never give give up”.

Han Lay’s Instagram postings indicate she has spent most of the past year in Thailand.

You can't just rock up in a foreign country because that is where you want to live, or because you don't want to go home.

If you read the article (I know, right?) you'll see that she's been living in Thailand on and off since the coup, but the dictators have just revoked her passport. That's why she was denied entry.

Good old Thailand, that beacon of hope.

According to a Facebook account called “Natty in Myanmar”, Han Lay had already sought asylum with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Thailand.

Myanmar’s exiled beauty queen lands in Canada after Thai airport limbo

A Myanmar beauty queen, who had spoken out against military rule in her country and became stranded at Thailand’s airport, said she was relieved but remained defiant after landing in Toronto on Wednesday.

Han Lay captured global attention last year with her pageant speech on the army’s deadly suppression of anti-junta protests. After spending the past year in Thailand, she was denied re-entry into the country after a brief exit and spent days in Bangkok airport, pleading on social media not to be sent back home.

“Since I landed here, I feel safe and my worries have gone away,” she told Reuters by phone from Toronto’s international airport where she was awaiting a connecting flight to eastern Canada. “I am always a supporter for Myanmar democracy; I will always support it as much as I can.”

The 23-year-old, whose real name is Thaw Nandar Aung, said she was going to live in Prince Edward Island with the government’s assistance but did not say how long she would be there or what her status in Canada was.

Thai immigration officials denied her entry last week following a brief visit to Vietnam, saying she was using invalid travel documents. Han Lay arrived in Toronto via Seoul, on a Korean Air flight.

Myanmar has been plagued by violence since the military seized power early last year, with clashes between junta forces and militias allied with a shadow government and pro-democracy groups. A crackdown has targeted pro-democracy and youth groups, activists, politicians, celebrities and social media influencers.

A Human Rights Watch director said Myanmar’s military rulers were using control over passports as a weapon against citizens’ right to travel internationally.

“Such actions should be universally condemned, and governments around the world should be on guard against the junta using similar tactics against overseas dissidents travelling on Myanmar passports in the future,” Phil Robertson said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Myanmar’s junta did not respond to calls seeking comment. A spokesperson for Canada’s immigration minister declined to provide details on Han Lay’s case without her consent.

    Another Myanmar model:

Myanmar Junta Jails Doctor-Turned-Model for Six Years Over Online ‘Porn’
    28 September 2022

A junta tribunal in Yangon sentenced a prominent doctor-turned-model to six years in prison on Tuesday for sharing photos and clips deemed provocative to video-hosting platforms that charge users.

Nang Mwe San and another top model, Thinzar Wint Kyaw, were detained in August and charged with “harming culture and dignity” for posting clips online, including to intimate video-hosting platform OnlyFans.

Nang Mwe San had her passport seized by the regime when she went to renew it in May as she was preparing to accompany her father to Bangkok for medical treatment. As her father could not go to Bangkok, he died on June 1.

Thinzar Wint Kyaw, who faces the same charge under Section 33 (a) of the Electronics Transactions Law, is however being tried in a civilian court in Mayangone Township, which started to hear the case on Sept. 14. The court has not yet given a ruling.

The duo participated in mass anti-coup protests along with other artists and celebrities following the military coup last year. Section 33 (a) carries a maximum term of 15 years.

    From the BBC Version

Nang Mwe San, a model and former doctor, had been charged two weeks ago for "harming culture and dignity", military authorities said.

She had also previously taken part in protests against the military, which seized power in 2021 in a coup.

The model lived in Yangon's North Dagon Township - an area where martial law is in force.

In such areas - and under state of emergency laws renewed by the Myanmar junta government earlier this year - those charged with crimes are tried in a military court where they're denied rights like access to a lawyer.

She was tried at the Insein Prison Court - the capital's notorious prison and the largest in Myanmar - where many political prisoners have been sent since the coup last year.

It's estimated more than 15,600 people - including Ms Suu Kyi, other lawmakers, activists and journalists - have been arrested since the military seized power.

I heard about her going public at the Miss Universe contest. I thought this might be something political related to that, but I guess it is just confusion.

^ imagine she's been on their hit list for some time:

She worked as a medical officer for local hospitals and NGO's in Shan, Kachin, and Rakhine States, including in displaced camps for the Rohingya Muslims.
Following the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, she participated in the anti-coup movement both in person at rallies and through social media channels with 2.2 million followers. She joined the "We Want Justice" three-finger salute movement. The movement, launched on social media, has been joined by many celebrities.
She speaks up on the country's military coup via videos and protested with the people in front of the Embassy of the United States, Yangon.
She says, "I also make a strong play in opposition to (the) military coup. All the generations in Myanmar know what we faced and lost in military rule. We cannot let that happen again. I am proud to participate in this protesting."
