7-year-old boy drowns at pool villa in Sattahip, Chonburi

A 7-year-old boy drowned in a 1.2-meter deep pool at a pool villa in Sattahip district, Chonburi.

Sattahip rescue services rushed to an undisclosed pool villa in Sattahip district at 6:30 pm yesterday, September 19th, after receiving a report that a 7-year-old boy had drowned in a pool.

The incident scene was a private house modified as a pool villa. The boy was found in a pool by a maid, whose name was withheld, who came to clean the house in the evening, according to Pol. Lt. Col. Kawin Juirod from the Sattahip police station.

The police interrogated the boy’s father, Surasak (last name withheld by police to protect the child’s identity). Surasak told The Pattaya News that he went outside to work as usual and returned home in the evening to find his son still playing at the house. The father then went to see a doctor and was later informed by the maid that his son had drowned.

It was not immediately clear if the boy had been left unsupervised while the father was working and running errands and Lt. Col Kawin stated to the press that this was being reviewed.

Pol. Lt. Col. Kawin suspected that the boy might have climbed over a fence to get to the pool before accidentally falling into it. The body of the 7-year-old was transported to a hospital pending further investigation. This marks the 3rd drowning at a pool villa in the Chonburi area this year. A similar tragedy happened also in Sattahip when a 4-year-old boy drowned at a pool villa a few months ago.

bladdy hell, that's shallow enough to stand in.

Tragic. People need to remember any depth of water is dangerous.

It’s hard to understand why people living around pools don’t have their babies waterproofed from the get-go. If they have money to have a pool they should have money for swimming lessons.

In addition to the fact a 7 year old should never swim unattended.

    I'd say it was.

Unless the kid is on a swim team or can touch the bottom, they should not be left unattended more than a few minutes.

TT, you've made the same mistake the family obviously did.

He could touch the bottom, but accidents happen.

He was seven years old. It's quite possible 1.2 meters was out of his depth.

Our pool has always been completely secured with a safety fence (no horizontal bars apart from top and bottom so can't be climbed) and a self locking gate, but even then there have been times when I've worried when I've been away. Thais (in my experience) are just so hopeless with things like this.

Even now, for our 11 year-old who swims like a fish, the pool is out of bounds without supervision.

Also quite true. Either way, he climbed a face and paid the price. Parents did not take enough care with the situation. Sadly.

Poor little boy. He was too young to be taken away. RIIP. And I hope the parents find closure.

I suddenly remembered the case of a 2-year old girl who was accidentally left in the elevator by the nanny. I think it was from South China Morning Post. The CCTV cam was able to record the toddler crying & banging on the door of the elevator. Very heartbreaking. I don't know if I saw it here or on YT. The kid left the elevator when it opened and saw an open window (probably in the hallway). Her body was found in the grounds of the building. It's a different situation, but both kids were taken too soon...

It's an identical situation. You can't keep an eye on kids absolutely all the time, but there is a big difference between being momentarily distracted - and even that can have lethal consequences - and paying no attention at all.
