Thailand orders 20th Century Fox to pay 10 million baht to restore Maya Bay

Today, Thailand’s Supreme Court ruled that Hollywood movie company 20th Century Fox – now renamed 20th Century Studios – is required to pay 10 million baht in environmental damages caused by the movie “The Beach” (2000) starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Filming for “The Beach” began at Maya Bay at the Phi Phi Islands in Krabi province, southern Thailand, in 1998. The bay became a world-famous tourist destination following the success of the film, but “The Beach” hasn’t been the same since.

A lawsuit was filed against the movie company for offences under Thailand’s National Park Act (1961) and National Environmental Quality Promotion and Conservation Act (1992).

Lawsuits were also filed against Thailand’s Forestry Department for giving the film production company the green light to “renovate” Maya Bay to make the movie picture perfect. The renovations had devastating and lasting effects on Phi Phi Island’s natural environment.

The uprooting of plants at Maya Beach and levelling of barrier-forming sand dunes has led to mass soil erosion, say environmentalists. Maya Bay was previously protected against soil erosion by native plants whose roots kept the sand together. Without the plants, all the sand washed away into the sea.

The beach was widened for the production of the movie, “which meant removing the natural barriers protecting it from the sea,” said Boonkasem Saokow, a local artist from Krabi province.

“It’s quite clear that the film company has destroyed a beach which is part of a national park.”

The Supreme Court has demanded Thailand’s Department of Forestry to use the 10 million baht from 20th Century Studios to restore the natural environment at Maya Bay to its natural state.

The 250 metre beach at Maya Bay reopened in January this year after a three and a half year closure. It opened to tourists under strict environmental protection measures with a maximum of 375 tourists per hour between 10am – 4pm.

In July, the bay closed again for another period of environmental restoration. Authorities planned for the bay to reopen again on October 1, in a few weeks. However, with today’s news, perhaps the bay will remain closed until further notice.

If I remember rightly, the production company removed tons of rubbish from the beach as well as relocating all the plants, before replacing them when filming was complete.

Since then you've had Phi Phi resuming the trash dumping business, plus a tsunami.

It will be interesting to see if Fox fight this or agree to pay - if it can be done without liability - so it doesn't stop them filming in the future.

Or of course they might just shift any planned filming locations to neighbouring countries, in which case the people scrapping over a paltry Bt10m will be made to look rather stupid.

10 million baht currently = $273,000. Unless there is some liability issue that they want to fight, I'm pretty sure that 20th Cent. could pay this out of their petty cash drawer!

Yes but how much of a joke do Fox want to make out of it?

As I understood it, the production company paid for, and undertook, any environmental repair at the time.

I daresay such work was not completed by the Thai despite having received funding but following the tsunami one could reasonably speculate that the extent of the so-called environmental damage by the company has been exaggerated, if not invented.

But still, that they have fuck'd around for 20 years over such a piddling sum is of course yet anther vivid insight into the foolishness of this silly society that will walk over hot coals in order to extort money from a foreigner if there is a sniff of a chance.

And these ghastly hypocrites have the effrontery to whine about environmental matters when their tourist industry permitted up to hundreds of visitors at a time to trample like cows over the area for over 15 years?

Sickening society, rotten to its core.

the avarice, greed and the propensity to gaslight that seems to be a trademark of the thai knows no bounds.

that ridiculous film was the catalyst that enabled the thai to promote the country and earn trillions of baht from the hordes of unwashed backpackers and entitled gap year parasites that descend on the country every year. the grasping thai saw the film and its aftermath as manna from heaven as the money rolled in.

blaming the film company for the resultant polluted overkill that is the signature of just about every tourist destination in thailand is hypocrisy of the highest order.

    full moon party

still seething over brexit i see, for how many years now?

    storm detritus you fucking moron.

you seem to be living a life of denial, first brexit, and now sewage on pattayas beaches, a problem that has affected that resort for many years. whatever next?

so calm down old boy, your insulting outburst is about as welcome as a drag queen at a texas tractor pull, and we wouldn't want you to have a stroke.

overpopulation, overcrowding, poor infrastructure, local government mismanagement and the incompetence of the utility companies is a problem worldwide, but the picture i posted was from an article highlighting the pumping of raw sewage into pattaya bay, admittedly it was from 4 or 5 years back, but we all know that the problem has not been solved yet.

Sin City Sewage?: Viral clips reveal possible waste pipes under Pattaya beach drain into ocean (VIDEOS)

A viral video clip offers one reason why Pattaya’s beaches are so nasty. Apparently, large-scale pipes buried under the sandy shore just near world-famous Walking Street are shepherding — something — from the business area of town right into the sea that is supposed to draw people to the resort town.

The one-minute clip, posted to Facebook page True Pattaya and viewed 24,000 times since Wednesday, shows cranes digging up the beach to reveal what some claim are waste pipes to perform maintenance.

Though some commenters noted that it might be rainwater or other drainage, most believed it to be sewage.

If you’ve ever visited the beach in Pattaya, you’ll have experienced the bad smells and murky water at their seaside firsthand.

The page claims that the pipes drain into the ocean about 300 meters offshore, so that the travesty can’t be easily viewed from shore.

The video was accompanied by the message:

“Pattaya’s dirty secret. The sewers are going right into the water. This includes shit, vomit, chemical waste, food waste, and everything else. Then the City Hall has the balls to claim that Pattaya is a family destination, a place for nature and sport? How do they let the kids and family touch this horrible water? Check this video and share it so that they are forced to invest in water treatment and stop this as soon as possible. There are three tubes like this. One at North Beach Road, at the top; this one, close to Soi 6; and another at the entrance of Walking Street. Their exit is about 300 meters offshore where people cannot see.”

Commenters said, “Good grief you’d have to be suicidal to swim there. Sheer filth, and not the good stuff,” “I always thought that water was a bit suspicious,” and “Last week, I was knee deep on Pattaya Beach Soi 13 and saw condoms, sanitary towels, and other rubbish. Its horrible, knee-deep and you cannot see your feet. The sea is brown!”

One ingenious person offered advice to the entire town to, “Stop shitting and vomiting.”

But the best comment has to be, “There is a beach in Pattaya??”

    Classic.

Thai channel Sophon Cable shared a related video yesterday that already has 17,000 views and outlines how polluted and dirty the shoreline and shallow waters are. It’s hard to identify what that gray sludge and muck might even be.

Well, we are less likely than ever to go for a dip at the beach in Pattaya. Well done to the town Thailand is trying to rehab from Sin City to a family destination.

Now now, he finds it soothing to watch the turds and used condoms bobbing by on the cerulean seas.

Clearly that photo used a filter, as it doesn't look too cerulean to me

I thought it was funny... the production company is probably thinking what happens if we don't pay the fine and are willing to pay top dollar to film in Thailand again...is Thailand really going to say no?
