Stricter Traffic Laws in Effect This Week

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Police have reminded motorists and drivers to abide by the changes in the traffic law, effective Monday (5 Sept).

People are urged to familiarize themselves with the 13th Amendment to the Land Traffic Act, which imposes harsher traffic penalties. The new penalties under the amendment are as follows:

    - A fine of up to 4,000 baht for speeding, running red lights or failing to stop at zebra crossings.

    - A fine of up to 2,000 baht for driving against traffic or not wearing a helmet or seat belt.

    - Up to one year in prison and/or a fine of 5,000 to 20,000 baht for driving without regard for the safety of others.

    - Up to one year in prison and/or a fine ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 baht for the first offense of drunk driving. Repeat drunk driving violations within two years of the first incident will result in up to two years in prison and/or a 50,000-100,000 baht fine.

    - Motorists who gather to race, illegally modify their vehicles or participate in suspicious activities will face up to three months in prison and/or a fine of 5,000 to 10,000 baht. Shops that illegally modify vehicles also face a two-thirds penalty. Race organizers and advertisers face up to six months in prison and/or a fine of 10,000 to 20,000 baht.

The amendment also requires all drivers and passengers in vehicles with safety belts installed, such as personal cars or vans, to fasten their safety belts. Pick-up truck drivers and front-seat passengers must wear their safety belts, while the truck bed can only carry a limited number of passengers. Safety belt violations may result in a fine of up to 2,000 baht.

The Royal Thai Police is also expected to finish reviewing the number of passengers for the truck bed and additional regulations to ensure transportation safety on December 4.

The BIB must have already worked out the uprated shares and be examining how to disipate/camouflage their unusual wealth.⁷

Do you see these "tougher" rules as anything more than a money making exercise Hazza. The feckless law enforcement in this country only serves one purpose.

Good luck getting up to 90 in your swift

I find this rather odd. Here in Bali province, there was a big anti corruption campaign a few years ago. Even though visa agents are legal here, the local immigration office was praised for stamping out bribery and corruption. Individual foreigners and local visa agencies now enjoy equal status.

It did backfire when local police were told that they could no longer accept bribes for failing to notice certain traffic offences. Provincial police no longer report or instigate on the spot fines for any reason, other than death or serious injury.

Oh it's a big PR exercise too.

"Look, we're making tough new laws to combat our world-class traffic fatalities record".

But yes, the result will be no change and perhaps more "revenue".

Perhaps a more sensible approach would be to not drive like a c u n t or do all these accidents not teach you anything?

^ The ones in your rear view mirror...

The changes didn't appear to change people's driving habits yesterday, they were still as crazy as ever. Only one police road block encountered on the way to Udon yesterday. I was surprised that the usual places for speed traps were not manned.

increasing fines is going to do fuck all to change peoples driving habits as most people simply throw them in the bin.

I get a ticket in the mail..... in the bin.

I get pulled over for a shakedown... I request a written ticket....in the bin.
