Traffic fines will be much higher, with the maximum rate of 4,000 baht, on Sept 5 when the newly amended Land Traffic Act will take effect, according to the police.

Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat said the amendment increased punishment on the traffic rule violations that were main factors behind road accidents. They included the violation of speed limits, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, he said.

The maximum fine of such offences rose from 1,000 to 4,000 baht, Pol Gen Damrongsak said.

The new law also raised the maximum fine from 500 to 2,000 baht for driving in wrong direction and failure to wear a helmet or a seat belt.

However, the law does not require pickup truck passengers on extended space behind the driver’s seat and cargo beds to use a seat belt but their number must not exceed its limit.

Child seats will not be mandatory on Sept 5 and the Royal Thai Police Office and the Department of Land Transport would announce relevant rules on the use of child seats by Dec 4, Pol Gen Damrongsak said. (TNA)

Motorists convicted of drink driving will face a jail term of up to one year and/or a fine of 5,000 to 20,000 baht. If they repeat the same offence within two years, they will face a jail term of up to two years and/or a fine of 50,000 to 100,000 baht.

Does anyone know what are the ages that children will have to use a child seat, and (unlikely) are there any specifications about them?

Got done yesterday for 500THB for 131 KPH in a 90 zone on a roadside handheld camera with two BIB and the collection point half a click up the road, they were all very nice about it.

Speeding tickets are not currently 1000.

But you're right, however as I said, the minimum "express payment" fee will probably rise.

Interestingly the section of road i got done on, dual carriageway had no speed signs for about 20 Kms, about 2 Kms after the stop the 90s appeared. Not a defence as i know i was speeding, but i suspect they use it to catch as many as possible.

I thought the maximum speed for a "car" was 90 all over Thailand so perhaps they don't need to post any signs.

Nope, 120 on the big roads outside lane, or 100 or 90 when they still have the old signs up right next to the 120 overhead signs 120 on the inside lane when Somchai has his pickup loaded with fruit in the outside lane doing 65, the middle lane with a lorry and trailer overtaking another lorry and trailer on the inside lane leaving you to occupy the dodgy crash barrier lane.

There are signs that get covered up and then uncovered near me.

I suspect you might be right and they are just gaming the system.

I was surprised they were collecting for the tea club so early in the month, i thought it was usually later once they had a better idea of the level of extor erm top up required.

My wife has been on at me lately saying that there's a new points system just been introduced. She's worried that my fines will now also be added as demerit points on her license.

I don't really see her problem as I pay all the fines anyway, but maybe there is a new points system just been introduced as well?

Just keep getting an IDP and then they can't put points on it £5 / year and trip back to the UK and a delay in divorce proceedings

Perhaps for repeat offenders. Who have previously not paid fines and the such.

But there is no way one drivers faults are going to be recorded on another persons license. Joint insurance policies yeah they could go up, but as you said you pay the bills.

There are lots of new speed cameras being installed along AH1 from CM to BKK. Last trip I logged 3 new ones, 2 with no warning signs and 1 with the sign covered by a bush. I pretty much have them memorized and clock 120 to 130. What is disturbing is they have sings showing 120 and 1/2 a km later 90. Which one is right. So far I lean at 120 but suspect it could be a set up when required.

always go low as Brucie said , you can see this getting worse. 90 kph on most inter provincial roads is ridiculous, 55 mph ffs, even 120 is bloody slow.

Yeah it is. And 90km on Hiways is just to damn slow. If I complied with it, my drive from Lampang to Chonburi would be frigging 10 to 11hrs. Thankfully I am not visiting the factory much. I used to enjoy the drive. Now it's a lot of work.

I viewed the 500 fine as a premium for being able to drive at reasonable speed. As it was I was slowing from 150 as there was traffic ahead.

I wish I could maintain 150 on the 7.... fucking trucks and buses using the 3 left lanes forces slow cars into the RH lane.

Or it is Friday afternoon and all the Bangkok fuckwits heading to Chonburi are driving at 90..
