Bangkok considers adjusting entertainment venue zoning

BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok city hall is considering adjusting the zoning regulations for entertainment venues to improve safety, following a tragic nightclub fire that killed 19 people in Chonburi.

Governor of Bangkok Chadchart Sittipunt said the city hall will need to discuss with the police ways to adjust the zoning regulations, while the city hall itself could help invest in technologies that can improve safety and security, such as AI-powered CCTVs with facial recognition systems that can identify persons.

He said some legal matters may need to be updated, as the existing regulations have been in place for a long period of time.

Pol Gen Adis Ngamjitsuksri, an advisor to the Bangkok governor, said most nightclub owners during his field visits are active in implementing safety recommendations, including the installation of additional fire exits.

The capital has recently seen a fire incident at a nightclub on Silom Soi 2 road, after which physical renovations were made to address safety issues, while the removal of electrical and communication cables will be performed by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.

Meanwhile, the death toll of the tragic fire accident at Mountain B nightclub in Sattahip, Chonburi, rose to 19 today, with a 23-year-old woman as the latest victim to succumb to injuries.
