Thailand agrees to allow former Sri Lankan president to take temporary shelter

Sri Lanka’s ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is due to arrive in Bangkok tomorrow (Thursday) from Singapore, after the Thai government agreed to allow him temporary shelter in the country, with the intention of onward travel.

Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said that the former president holds a diplomatic passport, which was approved by the Sri Lankan government, and can stay in Thailand for up to 90 days in accordance with the Thai regulations.

He said that the former president can stay in a hotel, a rented apartment or house, while admitting one potential issue, that being the Sri Lankan people in Thailand.

As a host country, Don said that Thailand can reject his request to enter Thailand but, after careful consideration andas long as he does not cause any problems during his stayhere, he can stay in Thailand for up to 90 days.

Spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry, Tanee Sangrat, said that the Sri Lankan government had asked the Thai government to allow the former president to enter Thailand.

Irrelevant, really. Diplomatic privilege is only active for the country specifically granting it. He would have had to apply for his diplomatic credentials to be recognised and accepted to have any special rights in Thailand

No he wouldn't. He has a diplomatic passport.

However, Thailand could have asked for it to be revoked.

^ and ^^^^ ... harry and the monkey
blathering about passports you naive simpletons.

he was an ignorant, obstinate, authoritarian, nationalistic and racist dictator, a military nepotist who suppressed democracy, propelled his country into bankruptcy, pocketing millions in the process, he persecuted the tamils and the muslims, never held a press conference, stamped out free speech and over 30 journalists were murdered during his time in office.

so, passport or not, of course the thai government will welcome him and his cash filled suitcases with open arms.

he is one of them. a brother, heart and soul.

That much is true. They probably would have let him in with a Neverland passport.

Yes, he would. That's the way it works.
Just because you have a diplomatic passport doesn't mean you have any rights outside the country that you, your foreign ministry, have applied to be accredited. The host country, as it were.
Trust me, Harry . . . I had one for 25 years, my brother and sister still have one, my father and uncle had one. The holder of a diplomatic passport only has privileges in the host country.

Nope. Thailand has no power to ask another country to revoke any passport. They just don't have to offer him any privileges. Usually diplomats travel on normal passports when they are not issued a diplomatic passport for a specific purpose.

This is more correct. Sri Lanka could have asked Thailand to confiscate the passport if it was inappropriately obtained. The ex-Pres would have then had to apply for an emergency passport from the SL consular section of the embassy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, they can't just "revoke diplomatic privileges". They have to ask the issuing country. And if the issuing country refuses to do so, the only recourse is to demand he leaves.

If I am wrong, just think all these years we could have just waded into the Libyan embassy and arrested Yvonne Fletcher's murderer instead of letting him go home.
