"Preparing for war!" This short social media post by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) 80th Group Army generated over 300,000 thumbs-up in 12 hours on Friday, amid high morale among Chinese soldiers ahead of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the PLA and escalating tensions across the Taiwan Straits.


The post on Sina Weibo had received more than 19,000 comments as of press time, with many netizens commenting excitedly "PLA soldiers, fighting! We support you guys!"


Some veterans said that they are always prepared to return to the PLA whenever the country needs them, and some netizens also expressed their wish for reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Straits soon.


The 80th Group Army posted a comment saying, "we must bear in mind the fundamental responsibility of preparing for war and charge on the journey of a strong army." The comment has received 8,000 thumbs-up.


Chinese President Xi Jinping said previously that only those capable of fighting can stop battles, and only those prepared for war don't have to fall into war.


Ahead of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the PLA on August 1, Xi, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the need for further implementing the strategy of strengthening the armed forces by training competent personnel in the new era, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.


Presiding over and addressing a group study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Thursday, Xi also called for efforts to give better play to talent in spearheading and underpinning the cause of building a strong military.


During a visit to the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution on Wednesday, Xi noted the PLA will mark the 100th anniversary of its founding in five years, and he called for new advances in building stronger armed forces to shore up the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.


Xi also presented an August 1 Medal to three military servicemen and conferred an honorary flag to a military battalion on Wednesday for their outstanding service.


The PLA Daily said on Friday that Xi's recent remarks have greatly boosted the morale of soldiers and will encourage all PLA soldiers to forge ahead and work hard to achieve the centenary goal of the PLA and win great victories and glory in the new era.

Reports that the Chinese government threatened to shoot down Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's airplane if she travels to Taiwan emerged on Friday despite China never making the threat.


Pelosi is expected to soon embark on a tour of Asia alongside a small bipartisan congressional delegation. While the California Democrat has not announced any firm plans to visit Taiwan, many have speculated that she may do so despite warnings about possible "consequences" from China, which claims sovereignty over the island under its "one China" principle.

A strongly worded Friday tweet from a Chinese Communist Party-linked tabloid newspaper columnist prompted some to say that China had directly threatened to shoot down Pelosi's plane if the visit does occur.

"If US fighter jets escort Pelosi's plane into Taiwan, it is invasion," Hu Xijing, who writes for the state-run Global Times, tweeted in response to a CNN article saying that Pelosi plans to depart for Asia on Friday. "The [Chinese Army] has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosi's plane and the US fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making tactical movement of obstruction. If ineffective, then shoot them down."

Although Pelosi's tour itinerary remains uncertain, Chinese officials have repeatedly warned her against making a stopover in Taiwan recently with vague threats of military retaliation.


"If Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan, the move will seriously violate the one-China principle and the provisions in the three China-U.S. joint communiques, severely endanger China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman Tan Kefei said earlier this week.

"The Chinese military will never sit idl[y] by, and will certainly take strong and resolute measures to thwart any interference by external forces and secessionist attempts for 'Taiwan independence,' and firmly defend China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity," he added.


However, no Chinese government official has directly threatened to shoot down Pelosi's plane if she does visit. Regardless, several media outlets reported on Hu's tweet as though it were a direct threat on Friday.


A Daily Wire article with the headline "China Threatens To Shoot Down Pelosi's Plane If She Tries To Visit Taiwan" argued that, although Hu is only a "propagandist" for China officially, he is also the "unofficial mouthpiece for the country" and is "able to say what China's top officials want to say, but often can't."


A headline published by the Daily Mail warned that "China says it WILL shoot Pelosi's plane down IF she travels to Taiwan under US fighter escort."

The Pingtan Maritime Safety Administration issued a navigation warning about the drills late Thursday local time, prohibiting all ships from entering waters near the island and the southeastern province of Fujian. It said the “live-fire training missions” would take place from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.


The news comes amid speculation over how China could respond to a potential visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, a self-ruled island that Beijing sees as part of its territory, despite never having controlled it.
Tensions have been simmering between the United States and China over the potential trip, with Chinese leader Xi Jinping recently warning US President Joe Biden that “if you play with fire you get burned.”


In a separate incident, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it had detected an unidentified drone flying over Dongyin Island — which is controlled by Taiwan but located near mainland China — twice on Thursday, adding that it could not rule out that the drone was used to “gather intelligence” in the area.




The statement from the Defense Ministry made no reference to China and did not speculate over who might have operated the drone.


Pelosi had been set to depart the US on Friday for a tour of Asia, though whether she will stop in Taiwan remains uncertain, a person familiar with her itinerary told CNN.


A security plan involving ships and aircraft is being developed by the Pentagon to ensure Pelosi is kept safe should a visit to Taiwan go ahead, according to defense officials.
