Five official agencies which are the Na Jomtien Municipality, Sattahip Naval Base, Sattahip District, Na Jomtien Police Station, and Pattaya Harbor Office declared Na Jomtien Beach as a vendor-free zone, effective June 27th. Violations would result in an arrest, according to the officials.


The declaration was released on Thursday, June 23rd, 2022, following a long-standing controversy of vendor encroachment on the new extended Na Jomtien Beach. The purpose of the vendor-free zone was to preserve the beach and restrict it to a relaxation spot only, according to the declaration.

Na Jomtien is located in Moo 1 of the Na Jomtien subdistrict of Sattahip, Chonburi. Originally, the Marine Department had spent 600 million baht on the beach restoration project to make the beach “a public place for residents and tourists to relax”, according to reports.

However, a group of vendors later occupied the beach by placing their stalls on the walkway, hanging lights, and setting up chairs for customers, which subsequently brought numerous issues such as traffic congestion, vendors fighting over “their” spots, and environmental degradation, the declaration stated.

Therefore, the Na Jomtien Municipality, Sattahip Naval Base, Sattahip District, Na Jomtien Police Station, and Pattaya Harbor Office declared Na Jomtien Beach vendor free and concluded that all kinds of commercial use of Na Jomtien Beach will be forbidden, effective June 27th, 2022. Those violating will be arrested by law enforcement, the officials stated.

I was just at this area last week and it seemed great.

Other than these food venders would anything else be going on this at this stretch of beach in the evening?

Thai manage to fuck up pretty much everything they touch and usually grubbing for a quick baht for as little effort as possible is at the root.

I like a few vendors by the beach, as long as they don't trash the place. Nice to have some cool drinks and mystery food on hand.

I know this was done at a lot of tourist places in China. It was just getting to be too much and ruined the scenery. There are still vendors, but they have to have a permit and those are limited.

Hundreds of street vendors protested against the prohibition of selling food and items on the extended Na Jomtien Beach at the Na Jomtien Municipality on Friday, June 24th, claiming their livelihoods were ruined. However, the officials insisted the ban remained in place but would explore future options for the vendors, without giving specifics.


The protest took place at 11 AM yesterday, June 24th, 2022, at the Na Jomtien Municipality located in the Jomtien subdistrict of Sattahip, Chonburi. Roughly 300 street vendors gathered to illustrate their demand to continue selling in the extended Na Jomtien Beach area after five official agencies issued a statement to forbid selling and giving commercial services on the beach with a threat of legal action (click).

According to The Pattaya News reporters, the protestors negotiated with Kanpong Suwanpathumlert, Permanent Secretary, who told them that many domestic and international beachgoers alike praised the extended Na Jomtien Beach for its beauty and resemblance to Miami Beach in the US. But after a while, the praise transformed into complaints mostly about stalls on the walkway, unkempt tables and chairs, garbage, or traffic congestion, the official explained.

He went on to say that many Na Jomtien residents and tourists were blaming the “misplaced” vendors for their inconveniences and had been pleading with the authorities to take action.

The negotiation lasted for one hour before Permanent Secretary Kanpong set his foot down in the continuation of the vendor-free Na Jomtien Beach measure, according to The Pattaya News reporters. The official then requested the vendors’ cooperation and pledged to quickly come to an agreement that would benefit all parties.

However, Kanpong stated that in order to come to an compromise the parties would essentially need to enact the ban and “start from scratch” and then explore possible options from that point, without giving specifics.

Going for a nice stroll down the beach and having to navigate loungers, table and chairs, and umbrellas is not a wonderful experience.

90% of working Thais have to work far harder for a baht than you ever did.

The pictures I have seen in the last few weeks of the beach vendors in the evening look okay to me. But the vendors must show responsibility if they want to do business. Set up your cart/truck on the beach side of the road. Set out your own chairs and tables. Then keep the area clean during dining and clean up the beach and sidewalk after the customers have left. Seems like win win to me. But the vendors must keep the area clean. To me this looks nice for a sunset and cheaper meal.

Thank God the rest of the civilized world isn’t populated by this human carrion that converts every public space in Thailand into a bargain basement tat marketplace peddling crap and shit food attracting vermin, fleas, roaches and stray dogs, cluttering up narrow pavement-less roads with their beat up pickups.

My wife is Thai, we have family commitments, she has a good social life, tennis and swimming are daily, year long activities, taxation is low, travel is simple, cheap and available, excursions are plentiful, good hotels and restaurants abound, reasonable Australian wine at bearable prices are now available even in Family Marts/Tops, I can source pretty much any farang food for my cooking needs. The ambient weather means I can sit on my balcony most days and avail myself of the zephyrs wafting in from the Gulf and I can have my early evening tipple watching the setting sun painting the twilit sky and bay in tropical hues that deepen into the blue-black of a moonless night that heralds the evening fleet of fishing boats luring squid to the surface with their green spotlights strung out necklace-like over the bay.
Sadly, my social life has been curtailed by folk moving on, dying or who have become enemies but that is pretty much par for the course everywhere and I do miss old buddies but that is old age, yes? I enjoy writing and have a project that is well under way that hones my creative talents and gives purpose to the day, and of course the internet offers passing interest and scope for fun - I do like mocking folk and find it a deeply enriching experience.
And with several pirate streaming sites available to me I can watch all the latest movies etc from wherever and keep abreast of what is good in the world of entertainment.

The Thai? Well, you can't have everything.
