Duterte's Daughter Sworn in as Philippines Vice President

MANILA (Reuters) - Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, was sworn in as the country's 15th vice president on Sunday, calling for national unity following a divisive election campaign.

"The days ahead may be full of challenges that call for us to be more united as a nation," she said in an inauguration address in her hometown Davao, where she took the oath of office with her parents standing next to her.

Duterte-Carpio, 44, was the running mate of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who also won in the May 9 elections and will be sworn in as the country's president on June 30, when their six-year term begins.

Marcos, the son and namesake of the disgraced dictator driven from power in a 1986 uprising, also took part in the inauguration ceremony attended by Duterte-Carpio's relatives, allies and supporters.

They both scored landslide victories, with overwhelming margins not seen in decades, forging a crucial alliance and running on a message of unity that also helped many allies win seats in the legislature and local government positions.

Like her father, Duterte-Carpio trained as a lawyer before entering politics in 2007 when she was voted in as her father's vice mayor in Davao, 1,000 km (600 miles) from the capital Manila.

She had initially wanted to be a doctor but instead pursued her political career and in 2010 succeeded her father to become the first female mayor of Davao.

"If we all take a moment to listen to the call to serve and decide to heed the call ... I believe the country will be heading toward a future of hope, security, strength, stability, and progress," said Duterte-Carpio, who will also serve as Marcos' education secretary.

Well, in truth both the US and Flipperland are somewhat adolescent in their developing democracies and therefore aberrations are to be expected.

I imagine the daughter was sworn in as vice president in order that her father should remain immune to the consequences of his murderous and thuggish reign.

The UK's historical democratic entrenchment didn't help it much when dim Dave Cameron had his BREXIT referendum wheeze.

It's the rank stupidity of electorates around the world that is the problem.

Looks like some of us have lived and travelled in the region more than others.

But then I was living in Singapore in 1988.

Agreed Katie, if it is truly the will of the people then there is not much one can argue about. How fair were these elections in your opinion?

Any country, not just Phils with a political and civil service infrastructure built on corruption will always have this same problems. Any candidates for change will find themselves unable to compete with the handouts/backhanders of the corrupt politicians and their business backers or could find themselves permanently out of the running.

@malmomike - true. It happens in many countries. Re: corruption, some months ago there was this news of anomalous spending for laptops bought by the Dept of Education. The laptops were provided to public school teachers during the pandemic. The laptops were prized at P75k each (~1500 usd). I saw a comment on soc med from a teacher saying that the laptops given/ loaned to them had low specs and were only worth P15k (~300 usd). So where did the money go? (face palm!). Similar case with the Dept of Health and the procurement of medicines and PPE. Pharmally scandal. Sigh...

Prior to the pandemic, I had a chat with a friend of my mom. He previously worked at the procurement office of a city hall. He said that 25 to 40% of the budget for supplies usually went to pockets. He couldn't stand what was happening so he resigned and established his own business. He didn't blow the whistle since it would endanger him or his family. I believed him. It's not the 1st story that I've heard of mysterious things happening at city/ municipal halls.

@bone collector - I think the results of the elections were fair. The Marcos-Duterte tandem has consistently led the surveys at ~50% voter/ survey results.

One of the problems was that there was no strong opposition candidate. PH has a multi party system, so there were several opposition candidates for president. The opposition votes were divided, while the pro admin camp was solid.

(I think I like the French model of elections wherein only the top 2 candidates proceed to the next round.)

I've also discussed this with my hike mate/ new friend (the experienced mountaineer who has climbed 350+ mountains). He said that in 2016, when Marcos Jr lost the election (for VP post), his camp had started the troll farms, revisionism and black propaganda (against Leni Robredo, the elected VP). These campaigns targeted the youth - Gen Z and millenials, who weren't alive during the martial law/ Marcos years and are the largest viter group.

PH has a young population and many of them are users of soc med like FB, IG, Tiktok, YT, etc. Now, teens and Gen Z's say that FB is passe & for titos/ titas (uncles & aunts), since Gen Z usually use IG, Tiktok or Snapchat. They believed the revisionist ideas fed to them on soc med.

When the results of the 2019 midterm senate elections came out, most of my friends/ colleagues were dismayed since the ones who won were admin bets. A colleague said that at that time, Marcos Jr was the top presidential bet among the youth.

When the Marcos-Duterte tandem won, I wasn't surprised. I can only sigh....

Bongbong Marcos' new wife doesn't need to flaunt her wealth. She comes from old money (Araneta clan) and is a lawyer in her own right. The Araneta family owns several properties & businesses, and their many scions are embedded in PH politics and business.

    Araneta family - Wikipedia

Notable scions in politics/ business now are:

Mar Roxas - former Local govt secretary & presidential bet in 2016 (he lost to Duterte); grandfather was an Araneta

Jose Miguel Arroyo - former first gentleman, husband to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (former president). His grandma was an Araneta.

Jose "Joey" Concepcion III - presidential adviser for entrepreneurship & businessman. His mom is an Araneta

Greggy Araneta - businessman, husband to Irene Marcos (sister of Marcos Jr).

Many other Araneta scions in prominent positions...

    +++++

Imelda Marcos was from a poor family, so she felt the need to social climb, display wealth & collect things. The old rich (like the Aranetas) are more subdued.
