Canadian Cyclist, 49 Struck and Killed in Central Thailand

A 49-year-old Canadian woman has been killed when she and her bicycle were struck by a speeding pickup truck in central Thailand on Saturday.

Kanchanaburi Muang police said on Saturday that Mrs. Marnie Scott, 49, from Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario, Canada died at the scene of the accident.

Police and a doctor from Kanchanaburi’s Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital pronounced her dead at the scene.

Mrs. Marnie Scott was hit by a speeding pickup as she was changing lanes on the ring road in preparation for a U-turn, police said.

Her husband Joseph, 50 a retired Canadian military officer said cycling gave them a chance to enjoy nature and get exercise.

Joseph successfully made the U-turn before the speeding pickup slammed into Marnie and her bicycle. Marnie was wearing a helmet at the time.

The Scotts founded Victory Bible Academy in Mae Sot, Thailand, a ministry of Christian Freedom International and Growth and Opportunity Foundation of Thailand.

The family was taking a final trip around Thailand before the youngest daughter Maija was to return to Canada.

Maija and Kiera, their daughters, were also traveling with them, but they were not present when the crash happened.

Joseph told police the pickup hit his wife while traveling at high speed and he did not hear the vehicle braking when it hit her.

Marnie and Joe celebrated their 26th anniversary just four days ago.

Her birthday was one week ago.

    “I’m so broken,” Joe said.

“She was my world. My best friend since we were 13.”

The driver Chaiwat Chutoh, 23, believed the cyclist would yield after he sounded his horn. He told police he couldn’t apply his brakes quick enough to prevent his truck from hitting Marnie and her bicycle.

According to police, the driver was charged with negligent driving causing death. He added that police were considering charging him with other crimes once they had more evidence to support their investigation.

He should also have told police he's a complete fucking imbecile.

Sounds like he didn’t even try to apply his brakes.

    Poor family, so unnecessary

    Well in fairness....

Thailand’s roads are the deadliest in Southeast Asia and among the worst in the world, according to the World Health Organization. About 20,000 people die in road accidents each year, which averages about 2 every hour.
I think these cyclists get singled out because of their obvious bravery.

Terrible news.. sad for the family.
I would never ride a bike on Thailand roads. I'd go on a path, even though there aren't many around sadly. There are many drivers like that ass in Thailand that just don't care about cyclists or pedestrian safety.

I was returning home in a Grab the other night and the driver did the traditional "Orrrrrrrrrrrr" and slowed down for some debris in the road. It's only when we got near we noticed the Pickup parked in a lamppost on the opposite side of the two-lane dual carriageway.

These idiots can't even drive safely on a straight, well-lit, empty, two-lane road.
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

Shurely you can put 2 and 2 together and presume he was out for a few drinks?

There is precisely one road I cycle on here, and it doesn't have anything close to those fokin' u-turns on it. Can't imagine someone that's lived here a while going out cycling around a town/city with motorway and u-turns.

A 23 year old Thai male, eh?

That would probably place him in normal human terms, from an emotional and cognitive development perspective, in the age group of 11-13.

    Or a precocious Bonobo ape.

cyclists in the uk have become a protected species, with draconian punishments proscribed for any motorist who dares or accidentally encroaches into their precious spaces. consequently the roads are filling up with these angry looking lycra clad loons. selfish, entitled and with cameras stuck teletubby like on their helmets, taking absolute advantage of their immunity from fault and using their imagined eco credentials to negate any reasoning put forward by the motorist, they hold up traffic as they stubbornly occupy the middle of narrow country lanes, refuse to stick to their cycle lanes, run red lights and crossings and terrify pedestrians.

when i see a western cyclist in thailand, i can only assume they are mentally deranged and have a death wish, a wish that apparently is often granted them.

    Gotta stay patient at U-turns.

    Especially on a bicycle.

(No, I'm not suggesting it was mainly her fault. )

Think there's some stuff about patience in that book they were flogging.

Looks like she was pulling across the lanes to make a U-turn.

A risky sport if in a tank, never mind on 2 wheels.

^^^ if living in the UK there is no excuse not to cycle to work.

Other than the atrocious weather, diabolical road surfaces, and the large vehicles being driven by obese cake eating simpletons.

Funnily enough a Chinky woman did that last week in Chiang Mai and killed a motorcyclist.

Be careful peeps in Thailand. I'm always scared when I get in a taxi at the way they drive.
It is even risky driving a scooter. Our dear friend Rury from Ajarn Forum got killed in BKK on a scooter.

It occurs to me I have yet to experience a Grab/Bolt driver who drives like a madman (or indeed madwoman, as there are lots of female ones).
