Police Hunt for Iranian Spies in Thailand

Police are on high alert as security agencies are closely monitoring the movement of Iranian nationals and some Thai Muslims. These individuals are suspected to be working as spies in Thailand.

According to reports, Thailand’s national police chief, Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk, has ordered the Central Investigation Bureau, the Metropolitan Police Bureau, and all nine provincial police regions to gather intelligence on these people’s activities.

An alert was issued after Indonesian authorities received information that a man named Mr. Ghassem Saberi Gilchalan had arrived in the country with a fake Bulgarian passport.

Indonesian authorities arrested the man on May 27, just before he was due to leave for Qatar, at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

According to the police, the man used a fake passport to enter the country. Police in Indonesia found he had entered the country more than ten times using false papers, and a court sentenced him to two years in prison.

    Iranian captured in Indonesia

Indonesian police also found 11 mobile phones, one tablet computer, a number of SIM cards, and cash worth more than 320,000 baht in the man’s possession.

A review of his mobile phones revealed the names of Muslims from Thailand. Indonesian authorities also believe that the man was an Iranian spy.

The Iranian explained to police that a former Iranian diplomat had assigned him several assignments in Malaysia and Indonesia.

One assignment involved lobbying Indonesian authorities to release the Iranian Hulk-flagged MT Horse oil tanker that had been apprehended in the country’s waters in January last year.

The man also set up a company as a front in Bali that served as a safe house for his covert operations, the Indonesian police said.

“The exposure of the Iranian has caused a stir among several countries who are concerned about Iran’s secret operations and spies, which they perceive as a threat to national security.

    Spies in Thailand

It is possible that similar operations are also being conducted in Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Pol Gen Suwat said.

According to the Bangkok Post, the former diplomat and the man had visited Thailand several times, where they met prominent Shi’ite Thai Muslims with close ties to Iran.

Pol Gen Suwat said, due to this fact, it is possible that Iranian spies are also taking part in secret operations in Thailand using fake passports, while some Thais may also be employed as spies with financial assistance or other kinds of support.”

A number of concerns have been raised about Thailand hosting the APEC Summit [in November], to which world leaders are expected to travel. Security arrangements will be given top priority.

“We cannot afford violence or unrest,” he said, noting authorities wanted to prevent a repeat of the explosion at Sukhumvit 71 in February 2012.

An incident involving a bomb that exploded prematurely at a rented house in the area in 2012 resulted in the arrest and jailing of three Iranian men.

As part of a bilateral agreement, two Iranian prisoners, Masoud Sedaghatzadeh and Saeid Moradi were sent home in November 2020 to serve their sentences.

The third Iranian national, Mohammad Khazaei received a royal pardon in August of the same year.

    Ya 4 heads up Kitty

Don't forget it was in Thailand the 2 Iranians on MH730 got passports for journey to t72 virgins.

If these Persian Carpet bombers only went across the Gulf to our sandpit Ajarns they'd soon discover theres hardly 72 virgins left in Thailand and certainly not enough to go round these suicide bummers.

Well well, i was sat next to an Iranian on my last flight back from BKK. Had a good chat, let him vent about British involvement in the Shah et al and sanctions and then we turned our conversation to food and how shit the Iranian footie team are - i think it was cathartic for him but he took the edge of my 1 1/2 bottles of red i'd had pre and post embarking which was supposed to knock me out for the first leg. Still when its in the name of fostering international relations its all in a good cause. I didn't feel like i'd been pumped but then perhaps he was a skilful spy.

MFA, police dismiss report of Iranian spies being watched in Thailand

The Thai Foreign Ministry and the Royal Thai Police issued separate statements today (Wednesday) denying a local press report that Iranians in Thailand are being watched by Thai police and that the police have been put on alert after a suspected Iranian spy was recently arrested in Indonesia.

According to a Bangkok Post report of June 6th, the suspected spy entered Indonesia more than ten times using fake passports. Eleven mobile phones, a tablet, several SIM cards and a substantial amount of cash were found by Indonesian police.

The names of some Thai Muslims were found in some of the phones, according to the report.

The Thai Foreign Ministry said that it has checked with the Royal Thai Police and has been told that they have not issued any secret directive alerting police across the country to watch out for suspected Iranian spies or ordered the monitoring of the movements of Iranian nationals in Thailand, as reported in the media.

The ministry said that Thailand and Iran have enjoyed cordial and friendly relations for a long time, based on mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty. It also said the Iranian government has offered an assurance that it would not allow the good relationship and trust between Iran and Thailand to be undermined.

In its own statement, the police denied a claim that they had been contacted by the Indonesian police on the matter, saying the force takes security threats seriously, especially ahead of the 2022 APEC Summit, to be hosted in Thailand in November, and that the report by Bangkok Post, and any other similar media reports, will be investigated.

On June 6th, the Iranian embassy in Bangkok issued a statement, rejecting and denouncing as baseless, the allegations in the Press report.

The embassy said that it had pursued the issue through diplomatic channels and found no evidence to substantiate the claims, adding that, since becoming an Islamic republic, Iran has been attacked with such smear campaigns.

I doubt the police are the ones doing the work here.

Of course they keep an eye on Iranians, they have good reason to.

I read the paper, thank you. Very interesting and surprising, including that a group/sect of Muslims came to Thailand from South Vietnam. Cambo also still has a sizeable Muslim population.

NNT and RTP Clarify on Previously Reported Issue

BANGKOK (NNT) - Previously, some local media outlets, including the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT), presented a news piece under the headline “Royal Thai Police on Alert for Possible Iranian Spies” on June 6, 2022. We wish to clarify that the piece was factually inconsistent and may have created misunderstandings about the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Iranian people.

The Royal Thai Police has stated that it did not issue any instructions for its authorities to monitor Iranian nationals or Thai Shia Muslims. This is in accordance with the “Police News” No. 155 dated June 8, 2022. Moreover, the Royal Thai Police has not shared or disclosed any information referenced in the aforementioned article.

Meanwhile, after consulting with the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand issued a statement, highlighting the fact that Thailand and Iran have always enjoyed close and cordial relations, based on dignity and mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty. The Iranian government has also reassured Thailand that it will do its utmost to prevent anything from undermining that mutual trust.

The NNT values our service as a member of state media organizations and takes great pride in our work. The NNT does not take this incident lightly and views it as a valuable experience that will contribute to improving the quality of our offerings.

The NNT also recognizes that inaccuracies in reporting fall short of responsible journalism and can be damaging bilateral relations.

I think this new interest in Iranian spying in direclty related to the thawing of Saudi relations with Thailand. There are ongoing conflicts between Saudi and Iran, notably through their proxies in places such as Yemen, and it's not unreasonable that security of Saudi citizens and assets in Thailand were a condition of the new relationship.
