Tourist falls to death from Samui waterfall

SURAT THANI: A 23-year-old Romanian tourist fell to her death from Na Muang waterfall on Koh Samui after she slipped while taking a photo on Saturday.

The incident was reported around 3pm. Rescuers were sent to the scene and checked the woman’s pulse but she was unresponsive, said Chayapon Intarasupa, the mayor of Koh Samui district.

Her male friend told the rescuers that the woman was taking a photo on the edge of the fourth level of the waterfall before she fell and hit her head on a rock on the second level. There were large wounds on the back of her head.

The tourist was identified as Nane-Iosana Bodea, a Romanian national who lived in Austria. She was staying at the Bang Po Village hotel in tambon Mae Nam on the north side of the popular resort island.

Her body was sent to Koh Samui Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

On Nov 14, 2019, Bastien Palmier, a 30-year-old French tourist, plummeted to his death from the same waterfall after he was trying to take a selfie while standing too close to the edge.

There are signs warning people of the dangers of Na Muang waterfall.

It seems like that headline is on TD at least twice a year.

    And for the same reason.

Very tragic. How can anyone not feel sympathy when while someone on a dream vacation falls to her death leaving her partner in shock ? Can you imagine? you are taking a picture of your GF and she falls to her death.
It seems like it is not the first time this has happened at that location and the authorities need to do something.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

If they try to blockade it or close it, then people will just ignore it and risk a fine. About the only think you can do is "guard" it some way. It is hard to stop people from risking themselves for a photo.

I understand that you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink,
But you can at least take it to water.
Signs warning tourist not to venture further, and informing that two deaths have occurred in the past two years from those who had not exercise care, would IMO go a long way toward , if not eliminating, reducing such incidents.
Anyone who ignores such warning and suffers, it's on them.

a person who of their own volition walks on wet slippery ground perilously close to the edge of a drop on to rocks for the purpose of photographing themselves, in spite of signs warning them not to, is already far removed from the supposed safety net that the provision of a silly warning sign is believed to offer.

she was a careless fool, and sadly for those close to her she paid a heavy price for her carelessness.

A boundary rail might work but it would have to be erected at least a metre or so from any edge and there will always be those who will want to circumvent it to get a more natural shot.

I have seen some several times myself and are also still alive

Can't see the connection between my own survival and someone else's lack of sympathy with a young maybe foolish girl, who died while on holiday.

    Can you ?

There are already warning signs. I people want to do dumb shit, let them. Just invalidate their (non existent) travel insurance.
The Thai see a natural resource where they can make money for nothing. The are supports food stalls and a small tourism market. It also provides a rather cruel elephant enclosure.
The place is ripe for development, but that could make it safer but for no profit!

Fence the access off, provide a zip line and a bungee jump with photo ops. That’s what the backspins of this world expect from a developing country. It’s unlikely to happen anytime soon, so not much point crying about stupid people on either side.

There already are signs warning people not to get close to the edge. She was stupid, risked her life and guess what? She paid with her life. It’s like a drunk driver in a car having an accident. Inevitable.

And I'll bet that several posters on TD, who are of some age, have been down that road.

Tempting faith out of youthful ignorance and gotten away with it unharmed.

    I know I have.

Guess you aren't the type, who liked a bit of living on the edge, and almost sure that you still haven't got kids in the "dangerous" age.

    But whatever

who liked a bit of living on the edge,
there are those of us with common sense, and those of us without.

and "living on the edge" as you put it will always cull those without enough sense to avoid taking things too far and falling over that edge.

Wasn't there one in Samui 2 years ago that fell onto the rocks, was seriously injured, possibly left partly disabled, and the Thai guide jumped down and rogered her?

I long ago lost count of the number of tourists who drown in Phuket despite there being large "DANGER - NO SWIMMING" signs everywhere.

Some people just ask for it.

Indeed they do. But some posters are just enjoying the chance for some faux outrage!
