Police to use lie detectors in 'Tangmo' drowning investigation

Police plan to use lie detectors when they question people who were on the speedboat with TV actress Nida "Tangmo" Patcharaveerapong when she fell into the Chao Phraya River and drowned last week.

National police chief Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk said on Monday that a lie detector was a tool to facilitate the investigation.

TV Program Star Nida’s 5 Friends to Face Jail Sentences

A Police spokesperson has told a press briefing that investigators are not satisfied with statements given by five people over the death of TV program star Nida “Tangmo” Patcharaveerapong.

Nida’s cause of death at this point is drowning. The cause of her falling into the river, whether it was herself or someone else, will take some time to determine.

Furthermore, police investigators haven’t been fully convinced by all of the five witnesses’ statements,” the spokesperson said.

Nida reportedly was on the back of the boat relieving herself when she allegedly fell into the Chao Phraya River on Thursday night.

After 38-hour long search operation for the missing Thai TV program actress finally ended when her dead body was recovered on 27 February 2022.

The speedboat owner, and driver, have been charged with operating an unlicensed vessel and negligence causing death.

    Charges of Negligence

On Tuesday, all 5 of the people on the speedboat underwent a physical examination. They have also been ordered to submit to a lie detector test.

The police spokesperson said all 5 will likely face charges of negligence leading to death and giving fabricated statements to the police.

Thai Criminal Code, Section 291 states: “Whoever commits an act negligently causing the death of another shall be imprisoned for not more than ten years or fined not more than 20,000 Baht.”

New evidence has allegedly emerged from the boat owner’s phone that he had admitted that Mr. Phaiboon who was driving the speedboat was inexperienced.

As a result of his inexperience, Mr. Phaiboon lost control of the boat, which prompted Nida — who was in the back of the boat — to grab hold of Ms. Wisapat for fear she would fall into the river, according to police.

Apparently fearing that she would also be dragged into the river, Ms. Wisapat shook her legs, causing Nida to fall overboard. This caused Nida’s right thigh to be cut by a blade of the boat’s propeller.

    Conflicting Statements

According to police, Mr. Nitas “Job” Kiratisoothisathorn had given a conflicting statement about how the boat was operated that night.

He was the only witness who told investigators the boat jerked suddenly, causing Nida to fall into the Chao Phraya River.

The police spokesperson said they would summon all five to face charges.

Investigators will receive more DNA samples from the boat soon, and more witnesses will be interviewed in addition to the 12 already questioned, the spokesperson said.

The phones of all six aboard the boat have been sent to the Police Technology Crime Suppression Division to find more clues and evidence.

Nida was a Thai program television actress, whose full name is Tangmo “Nida” Patcharaveerapong. She was born in Thailand on September 13, 1984, and was scouted by a TV Guide Talent Agency, when she was in fifth grade.

She then appeared in various TV Programm advertisements in Thailand.

Additionally, the 37-year-old actress starred in the 2006 film ‘Ghost of Mae Nak’, which was based on one of Thailand’s oldest ghost legends. In 2013, Nida married actor Pakin Kumwilaisuk. The couple filed for divorce after just two years together.

Nida, who was dealing with deep depression and heartbreak, was admitted to Kasemrad Prachachuen Hospital on July 7, 2015, after overdosing on drugs. Afterwards, she admitted to the media that she had attempted suicide due to her difficult relationship with her ex-husband.

In a suicide attempt, the TV Program star reportedly ingested an excessive amount of sleeping pills and badly cut her wrists.

She continued her Ome TV career and worked with the police as a spokesperson for victims of “fake” celebrities who robbed them in Bangkok of their money.

I don't see it mentioned here yet. According to Thai tv last night the boat owner's father-in-law is a senior police officer. The local conspiracy theorists are having a field day.

Despite the Thai Housewife News Network (THNN), it seems Thailand's finest gumshoes are still on the case.

Conflicting accounts of the circumstances surrounding the death of TV actress Pattarathida "Tangmo" Patcharaveerapong, who drowned after falling from a speedboat into Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi on Feb 24, have cast a cloud over a number of key witnesses, said Pol Maj Gen Udon Yomcharoen, deputy commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 1, on Monday.
"Each witness was interviewed separately and the stories they told us were different. It is certain that at least one must have been lying," he said.
Pol Maj Gen Udon, assigned to the case by the commissioner of Provincial Police Region 1, said that so far two charges have been laid.
Tanupat "Por" Lerttaweewit, the boat's owner, and Phaiboon "Robert" Trikanjananun, the driver, are both accused of operating an unlicensed vessel and negligence leading to death.
However, he said a third suspect may be charged following statements by others present that contradicted findings by the forensics team.
Pol Maj Gen Udon said that officers had raided the house of Nitas "Job" Kiratisoothisathorn, one of the five on the speedboat, and are now investigating whether liquor they found is linked to the incident.
He said that police are looking at the boat's GPS and telecommunications footprint, but have yet to find any evidence of a sexual cause behind the tragedy nor any use of recreational narcotics.
Meanwhile, Krissana Sriboonpimsuay, the lawyer representing Pattarathida's mother, has called on Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan, former director-general of the Central Institute of Forensic Science, to perform a fresh autopsy.
The lawyer said he would seek a meeting with Khunying Porntip, who is now a senator as his client, Panida Sirayootyotin, expressed confidence in her abilities following doubts over the veracity of the earlier post-mortem.
Tangmo, 37, fell into the Chao Phraya River near Pibul 1 pier in Muang district of Nonthaburi around 10.40pm on Feb 24 while travelling in a speedboat with five other people. Her body was found about 1pm on Feb 26.
Police are currently holding daily media briefings on the state of the investigation.

Demonstrators demand new investigation team in drowned actress case

A small group of people, with the support of some lawyers, demonstrated in front of Nonthaburi police station yesterday (Sunday) to demand, among other things, the replacement of the current team of police investigating the drowning of TV actress Nida Patcharaveerapong, aka “Tangmo”.

The demonstrators want the team from the Nonthaburi either to be replaced by officers from the Department of Special Investigation or by a new team, with the media taking part as observers, amid a media circus surrounding the case, the investigation of which has seen little progress.

The latest forensics update indicates that the cuts on the actress’s thigh, believed to have been caused by the boat’s propeller, were not the cause of her death, because no major blood vessel was damaged.

The demonstrators are also demanding a second autopsy, to be performed by forensics expert Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan, currently a senator and former director of the Justice Ministry’s Central Institute for Forensic Science. A senior Justice Ministry official has confirmed, however, that Dr. Porntip cannot take part in the second autopsy, but she can attend as an observer.

The group said they suspect that, besides the five people on board the speed boat with Nida on the fatal night of her fall into the Chao Phraya River on February 24th, there might be more people with knowledge about the tragic incident.

After the brief rally, the demonstrators dispersed.

Former commissioner of Provincial Police Region 1, Pol Lt-Gen Amnuay Nimmano, said in his Facebook post yesterday that some would-be media and social media detectives, who have no actual experience in investigation, have interfered with the police using imagination, conjecture and groundless suspicion about the circumstances surrounding Nida’s death, to the extent that the police have been thrown into confusion.

Meanwhile, many Thai celebrities attended Nida’s funeral at Liberty Church Bangkok yesterday, which was the last of the three-day event. As many as 1,000 people attended the funeral. Many of Nida’s friends and fans brought light pink balloons and flowers to pay respects to the late actress.

Many of Nida’s friends attending the funeral said that there should be transparency in the investigation into her death, as the topic is of public interest.

Public prosecutors have indicted six suspects over the death by drowning of actress Nida "Tangmo" Patcharaveerapong on Feb 24.
Nonthaburi provincial prosecutors announced the decision on Wednesday, after having postponed it three times.
The six are speedboat owner Tanupat “Por’’ Lerttaweewit, Phaiboon “Robert’ Trikanjananun, Wisapat “Sand’’ Manomairat, Nitas “Job’’ Kiratisoonthisathorn, Tangmo’s manager Idsarin “Gatick’’ Juthasuksawat and Peam “Em’’ Thamtheerasri.
Mr Peam was not in the speedboat when the actress fell into the Chao Phraya river and drowned, but he allegedly advised the other passengers to delay giving statements to police.
