Kanchanaburi sickle attack, one Brit dead, one injured

Attacker with history of mental illness held after incident in Kanchanaburi

Briton killed, compatriot badly hurt in knife attack
    22 JAN 2022 AT 11:38

A Briton was brutally killed and his compatriot badly hurt in a knife attack in front of a rented house in Muang district of Kanchanaburi in the early hours of Saturday, police said.

The fatal attack occurred in tambon Tha Makham at 3.55am, Thai media reported on Saturday.

The dead Briton, 49, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was found lying face down in a pool of blood with knife wounds to his neck near a marble chair in front of the house.

Shaun Kevin Dagnan, 55, sustained serious knife injuries. A sickle and a pair of shoes believed to belong to a male attacker were found at the scene, police said.

According to a police investigation, the two Britons were drinking beer in front of the house and playing loud music late at night before the attack. Later, the attacker walked towards them and attacked them before fleeing.

Police initially believed the attacker might have been upset by the loud music.

Local media reported that police had obtained the identity of the suspect, aged around 22-23 years old.

The suspect lived nearby and had a hospital record of mental health problems. He was physically attacked by angry residents and was sent to a hospital.

indeed, the thais dislike of loud music and the consideration they always show their neighbours is well known.

Sitting outside playing music until 4am isn't gonna win over the neighbours that live 2 meters away.

A 22-year-old Thai man has been charged with the murder of a British man in western Thailand, according to local officials.

Marcus Evans, 49, died after being attacked in Kanchanaburi in the early hours of Saturday, Thai police said.

A second British man, named by police as Shaun Dagnan, 54, was seriously injured and taken to hospital. A sickle was found at the scene, they added.

The alleged attacker is due in court on Monday, police said in a statement.

They also said Mr Evans had lived in the area for five years, and Mr Dagnan for three.

Police released passport photos of the two men, which show Mr Evans was born in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset and Mr Dagnan was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

A spokesperson from the UK Foreign Office said: "We are in contact with the Royal Thai Police following the death of one British man and the hospitalisation of another in Thailand and are ready to provide consular support."

The girlfriend of a British man killed with a sickle-shaped knife in Thailand has told how she looked his alleged attacker in the eyes and asked him why he did it.
Marcus Evans, 49, from Weston-super-Mare, was killed in a row over loud music during the early hours of Saturday morning in the Muang district of Kanchanaburi.
A second Brit, Shaun Dagnan, 54, was also seriously injured in the incident and is recovering in hospital.
A Thai man, named as Prasut Thipthep, 23, was arrested shortly after the killing and has since been charged with murder and attempted murder.
Mr Evans' girlfriend Wassana Muanchit, 33, described him as the "love of her life" and told how she had last seen him coming back into the house to get a beer.

She noted that he "looked normal" and not drunk, but later a neighbour came and repeatedly told her to check on her partner.
Ms Muanchit, a mum-of-one, said: "The neighbour said he was lying down on the floor. When I went out I found out he was dead.”
She told The Sun: “I was out of my mind because I loved him so much. He was the love of my life.”
Ms Muanchit said the police allowed her to talk to the alleged attack after his arrest, stating that she "looked in his eyes" and asked why he killed Mr Evans.
She added: “I said I was very angry at him. I said 'why couldn't you talk or ask nicely? You could have told me or told the police, but you shouldn't have killed him'.”

Mr Evans was Ms Muanchit's main provider and looked after her and her daughter, she said.
Mr Dagnan is believed to have been in Thailand visiting his girlfriend Nong Pranee, who lives in the area, locals said.
Police Colonel Somkiart Chomchai, of the Muang district police, said the alleged attacker set upon Mr Evans and his pal after becoming enraged by their loud music.
According to The Sun, he said: "At the scene, there was a large number of blood marks on the ground. On the marble table were beer bottles and a Bluetooth speaker.

"We interrogated neighbours nearby the scene and everybody said that the foreigners had been playing music loudly, which made the attacker angry.
"We have to gather more information on the incident to find whether the attacker was suffering from a mental illness."
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: “We are contact with the Royal Thai Police following the death of one British man and the hospitalisation of another in Thailand and are ready to provide consular support.”
